1
Embedding crop diversity and networking for local high quality food systems
DIVERSIFOOD presentation Chable V., Dibari B., Bonelli B., Rey F. Presented by Klaus Rapf, ARCHE NOAH
2
The Project DIVERSIFOOD is an EU project funded under the Horizon 2020 Programme. By integrating existing networks across Europe, the project will strengthen the food culture to achieve local high quality food systems.
3
The Objectives innovations DIVERSIFOOD aims to develop:
New biodiversity management models New approaches to plant breeding and management New crops, varieties and populations Diverse healthy and tasty food products and market valorisation Original experimental and communication tools to connect activities and people
4
The Consortium 21 Partners 12 Countries ITAB INRA RSP IT ORC FiBL PSR
LBI IPC ITBQ UNIBO UNIPI RSR Formicablu ARI LUKE CSIC RAS ÖMKi Arche Noah ÖIKOS 21 Partners 12 Countries
5
The Consortium Thanks to the composition of its consortium, DIVERSIFOOD covers the whole food chain: from genetic resources to marketing, connecting all the different actors involved.
6
Structure of the Project
7
Crops tested by country
8
The multi-actor concept
Common objective embedded in the food chain reality Beyond research Seed savers SMEs Facilitators Citizens Bakers Researchers Millers Farmers Complementary know-how, methods and knowledge for integrated protocols on the same grounds, within trials, experiments, surveys… Lead by the more relevant actors according to the needed competences The text should be made clearer … Global approach and research based on actions need time and space to share vocabulary, concepts, understanding of results, expression of new questions from first actions (iterative process)
9
Broadening diversity participatory research & plant breeding
Seed from genebanks or garderners or farmers WP2 : discovering new diversity and uses among untapped species or types of common cultivated plants New populations varieties bred on farm Evaluation from soil to produce with relevant stakeholders Local or heritage varieties WP3 : creating new diversity and uses among untapped species or types of common cultivated plants “ to contribute to securing sufficient supplies of safe, healthy and high quality food and other bio-based products, by developing productive, sustainable and resource-efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services and the recovery of biological diversity, alongside competitive and low carbon supply chains.” Locally adapted varieties created and/or distributed by small scale breeders
10
Connecting diversity to seed systems and civil society
WP4 - Managing diversity and seed systems, working on: WP5 - Embedding diversity in the food chain supply, studying: Quality of the seeds Links between formal and informal seed systems Networks and communities in diversity management Recommendations for biodiversity management Awareness of key policy makers on cultivated biodiversity Socio-economic analysis of value chain of diverse local food and newly bred varieties coming from participatory breeding Relationship between local crop production and consumers’ behavior Applicants are invited to find solutions which will make positive changes to our society, economy and environment, using resources more efficiently”
