2 Vaccines that adults need routinely
Human papillomavirus (age 26 & younger) Influenza – every year Measles, mumps, rubella (age 60 & younger) Pneumococcal—2 types ( age 65 & older) Tetanus-diphtheria AND pertussis (whooping cough) Varicella (chickenpox) Zoster (shingles) (age 60 & older)

3 Are they getting them? Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Females yrs: 42% Males yrs: 16% Influenza (>18yrs): % MMR (<60 yrs) ??? Pneumo (>65 yrs): 64% Td/Tdap (>19 yrs): 23% Varicella ??? Zoster (>60 yrs): 31% CDC. MMWR Surveillance Summaries 2017;66(11);1-28.

4 Vaccines that are needed by adults with risk factors
Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Meningococcal ACWY Meningococcal B Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) Pneumococcal (<65 yrs)

5 Meningococcal Disease
A bacterial infection (13 serotypes) Case-fatality rate is 10-15%; long-term sequelae (e.g., amputations) is 20% MenACWY (improved) vaccine: 2005; MenB vaccine: 2014 Vax recommended for adolescents/teens, college students living on campus, travelers, community outbreak, certain medical conditions.

7 Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
Combined tetanus-diphtheria (Td) for adults: 1953 Increase in pertussis cases due to transmission from adolescents and adults Adolescent/adult pertussis component added in 2005 Recommendation for 1-time vax for adults through age 64; cautious approach for vax of pregnant women Continuing pertussis cases, especially in young infants Recommendations expanded to include: Pregnant women (during each pregnancy) Adults of all ages (including 65+) Vaccination rate: 23% of adults

8 Personal Stories: Whooping Cough (pertussis)

9 Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
Caused by reactivation of Varicella Zoster virus 30% of adults will develop shingles; risk increases with age Shingles rash appears on one side of face or body Main symptom: Pain!!! Herpes zoster vaccine licensed: 2006 Vax recommended for all adults age 60 years and older without a contraindication, including Those with or without a history of chickenpox History of shingles A 98-year-old unvaccinated great-grandmother Vaccination rate: 31%
