1 EDC Confucius Hub 20th September 2016

2 Background Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools (based at the University of Strathclyde) Initially a co-operation between Learning and Teaching Scotland and Hanban (the office of Chinese language and culture across schools) Supported by Scottish Government Confucius Hub model basing the Confucius Classroom in a school within a Local Authority Initially 10 Confucius Hubs in Scotland – now 22 East Dunbartonshire launch 13th February 2009

3 St Ninian’s Hub Based in school library and dedicated Confucius Classroom Funding Resources can be booked out by other schools Link school – No. 42 High School in Tianjin Teachers from link school working in schools in East Dunbartonshire Council Teaching of Mandarin Chinese New Year celebrations

12 Chinese New Year S1 pupils involved for the day:
Morning – Workshops (Chinese Knots, Paper Cutting, Calligraphy, Tai-Chi, Opera Masks, Painting, Lanterns, Cooking) Afternoon - Performances Primary/Secondary from across the LA (Holy Family, St. Flannan’s, Meadowburn, St Machan’s, Douglas Academy) Parents Partners Video

13 The ‘Chinese Bagpipes’ were difficult to play but it was fun.
I have enjoyed performing and helping with the show. Each performance was put together in an excellent way S3 Taking part in the Chinese New Year celebration was amazing. The singing and dancing was great and I loved learning about the culture and performing on stage with my friends. S1 The ‘Chinese Bagpipes’ were difficult to play but it was fun. S3 The Chinese New Year show was a culturally rich and interesting way to show the unique traditions of China. S6 I enjoyed the Chinese New Year show experience. I participated in the Chinese hip pop dance. I liked learning about the Chinese culture. S1

15 Moving Forward Continue to embed across the curriculum
S1 Communication with Tianjin pupils Setting up a programme to allow opportunities for communications between our pupils and Tianjin 42 Good Practice Showcase Schools currently preparing exemplars of good practice to share. Bringing together teachers leading activities to display the work they do on Chinese Language and Culture
