6. Overview Y1 – Y8 Foundation established
Y9 – Y13 Gradual progression to individual courses appropriate to each student.
Depth is necessary for students to be able to achieve in NCEA level 1 and beyond to allow study in sufficient detail to pursue a chosen pathway.
(Some selection therefore necessary as students major on their strengths and can drop areas they are less gifted in! Parents please note!)

In Year 10 there are 4 options. You can choose 2 fom a predominantly tech based option line and 1 from predom arts based + any 2- from either line.

11. Y10-13 Academic Pathway Progression from Y10 – Y13
Y10 – 4 core subjects (MAT/SOS/ENG/SCI)
+ 4 options = 8 subjects
Y11 – 3 core subject (MAT/ENG/SCI)
+ 3 option subject = 6 subjects
(NCEA Level 1 - for most students) Y12 – 2 core subjects (MAT/ENG)
+ 4 option subject = 6 subjects
(NCEA Level 2)
Y13 – 5 subjects – no compulsory subjects.
(NCEA Level 3 / Tertiary entry)
(Some selection every year for students)

Y12 Science (Y11) ‘splits’ to offer Biology / Chemistry / Physics / Earth and Space Science
Y12 Art Design / Photography introduced.
Y12 Classical Studies introduced.
Y12 Plus other subjects introduced - e.g. Tourism / Early Childhood / Automotive / Electronics
Y12 Possibility of ‘Trade Academy’ subjects through BoP Polytechnic. Eg Café Operations.
Much flexibility as students move through the years!

- Enterprise Studies (new subject)
plus
- Design & Visual Communication (also available in Line 2)
- Computer Studies (also available in Line 2)
(can not do Computer Studies / DVC twice!!)

17. Y10 - 4 OPTION SUBJECTS LINE 2 CHOICES REQUIRED FOR 2017 –
Based again on 2 subjects for first half a year – and another 2 subjects for second half. Total of 4 over the whole year.

18. Online Option Selection

Students able to prioritise their options
(we want to do our best to provide for those requested – but numbers may make this not possible)
sent to parents by the end of Week 8(this Friday) – with a link to make selection choices. Click on the link and then choose the appropriate subjects (and please remember to SAVE!)
These to be completed by Wednesday September 21st
(Earlier if possible)

19. Y10 Senior Secondary
Uniform : Y10 identified as part of the Senior School
Academic Programme
As part of the foundation for N.C.E.A, some subjects offer 1 standard. (average up to 30 credits available)
Better understanding of standard required
Better understanding of subject suitability
Expectation of raising quality of student work
This programme will continue in 2016.

20. NCEA Level 1 Credits gained in Y10 count towards NCEA Level 1.
For Students to gain their L1 Certificate they require
80 credits at any level - including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits
In Y11 the course is divided into parts.
Each part offers an NCEA standard worth credits
All standards contribute to the students overall total.
In Y10 only a few standards are attempted to give students / parents a better understanding.

21. NCEA Endorsements
1. NCEA Certificate Endorsements (all subjects counted)
Merit (50 credits gained at Merit or Excellence grade)
Excellence (50 credits gained at Excellence).
Can be gained over a many years, so credits gained in Y10 will contribute towards a certificate endorsement in 2017.
2. NCEA Course Endorsements (individual subjects)
Merit (14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence)
Excellence (14 credits at Excellence)
Credits must be gained in the same year.
Only students in the accelerate classes can gain a course endorsement in 2017.

22. Y9 / 10 Enrichment Y9 / 10 Mathematics – Streamed by ability
In Y10 top stream completes NCEA Level 1.
Y9 Science – By home room classes.
Y10 Top stream selected from top Y9 students - takes NCEA Level 1
Y9 / Y10 Extension English class
Remaining classes mixed ability
Selections based on proven performance!

23. Y11 – Y13 Enrichment
Continues through into Y11-Y13 provided good progress is maintained
Students able to progress at appropriate speed
Multi-level courses common
(i.e. some at L1 / some at L2 courses)
Timetable designed to allow this

24. Learning Support Mrs. Karen Gilby: Head of Learning Support
Support available for students
Assessed by Mrs. Gilby who works closely with subject teachers / teacher aides to determine entry to GST option (Guided Study)
Some students may take 2 years to achieve NCEA Level 1.
Support also linked to Assessment conditions allowed to students by NZQA.

25. Work habits Goal – To build on already established good work habits
Transition however from parent / teacher driven study to student driven study
(Transition is not always easily achieved!)
Important to recognise changing roll of Parents.

26. Ideal Work habits Importance of quality results achieved by -
Good time management / planning skills
Work completed on time
Work assignments not left to last minute
Homework patterns clearly established
Homework completed regularly (every day)
School time is guarded and not used for ‘social’ activities
Regular attendance at school
Family holidays need to be kept to the holidays
(NCEA assessment can not be re-scheduled for family holidays!)

27. Parent Support
Success is achieved with Students / Parents / Teachers working together
(use of s of real value)
Goal to be fair BUT firm.
Genuine excuses are always valid and respected, but it is important to remember what message is being given to the students. If students get away with ‘soft’ excuses in Y10 – they will expect the same ‘success’ in later years.
