1 Implementing SimuCase in the Classroom and the Clinic
Clint Johnson, M.A.,CCC-SLP, CSHE Certified Simulation Healthcare Educator

2 Disclosure Statement Relevant Financial Relationships:
Clint Johnson is employed by Allied Health Media, the parent company of SpeechPathology.com and SimuCase. Relevant Nonfinancial Relationships: The speaker has no relevant nonfinancial relationships.

3 What is Clinical Simulation/ Alternative Clinical Education?
Standardized patients Virtual patients Digitized manikins Immersive reality Task Trainers Computer-based simulations Council for Clinical Certification, 2016

4 What does not count as a clinical simulation?
Watching videos Observational experiences Students giving tests to each other Council for Clinical Certification, 2016

5 Steps for Designing Simulations with Success
Perform a needs assessment Define learning goals and objectives Select Assessment methods (formative vs. summative) Educate and assess learners using simulations (prebrief) Select evaluation method (rubrics, checklists, instruments, reflections)

6 Steps for Designing Sims (Cont.)
Select your simulation modality and design your simulation event Identify additional resources needed Organize your simulation team Prepare materials for learners and simulation team Conduct simulation pilot activity

7 Components of Effective Computer-Based Simulations
Make reflective decisions Improve critical thinking Include multiple solutions Encourage discussion Provide feedback Develop empathy Train specific skills Include ethical considerations Encourage collaboration Apply knowledge Promote discovery learning Patient-Centered Johnson & Williams, 2016

8 SimuCase Demonstration

9 What’s New in SimuCase There are 30 cases in the library including pediatric feeding evaluation and treatment, transgender voice, school-age language with dyslexia, adult motor speech, dysphagia and more. New partnership with Pearson and Western Psychological Services

10 Faculty Dashboard Monthly pricing Monitor all students in real time
Track hours Hide cases Monthly pricing

11 What does supervision look like for computer-based simulations?
Supervision must include a debrief May be synchronous or asynchronous Debrief may be counted as 25% supervision requirement Debrief may be face to face discussion, self-reflection with feedback and/or written self-reflection with feedback You do not have to watch the student complete a computer- based simulation Council for Clinical Certification, 2016

12 Implementing SimuCase for Hours
Supervisory component - supervisors should be available to answer students’ questions. Feedback that SimuCase provides during a case provides supervision Students must receive a competency score of 90% or greater Debrief (may not be included in hours) May have student write a diagnostic report/SOAP note

13 Prebrief Review the technology
Provide students with the referral form for the case to begin planning Let students know how many minutes a case is worth

14

15 Provide Feedback Establish an opportunity for students to receive feedback as they attempt to complete a case. Feedback may be given in groups or individually

16 Debrief “People don’t learn from their experiences. They learn from reflecting on them.” Start with the clinical debrief. Address clinical mistakes or other clinical issues the team brings up. Spend 5-10 minutes. Provide formal thought time for students to recollect, reflect and report How did it go? What did you do well? What could you do better? What will you do differently next time? How would you summarize your experience? What did you learn from your experience?

17 Using SimuCase as a Remediation Tool
Identify student needs and choose specific cases that would be beneficial Establish a baseline score using SimuCase in assessment mode Provide the same structured clinical experience (prebrief, feedback, debrief) Student should receive a competency score of 90% or above

18 Case Development We are currently hiring contract case developers
Seeking the following cases: Aural Rehabilitation, Cochlear Implant, Hearing Impaired, Motor Speech, TBI, AAC Contact Katie Ondo
