IT is transforming to meet the needs of the digital business
Business Imperatives Drive Growth and New Revenue Move with Speed and Scale Reduce Cost of Taking Risks IT is being asked to help set the business apart in a global, digital, and mobile world. A set of business imperatives are driving new opportunities for IT. While these imperatives aren’t new, the digital revolution has heightened the speed and necessity of these imperatives. Everything must be faster and more transparent. [BUILD 1] First, in the current macro environment, our customers are saying that driving new revenue and growth is priority #1. For IT, this means their opportunity is to focus on driving transformation initiatives that advance the goals of the business. In fact, the business expects it. To do this, IT is shifting from simply maintaining IT and keeping the lights on to focus on more strategic activities that can help the business drive growth. [BUILD 2] Second, businesses are changing the speed at which they deliver products and services. They are focused on moving with greater speed and scale to capture new revenue opportunities. For our IT customers, time is critical. Time to market of a new product. Time to value against a business goal. Time to insight with faster access to data that the business can act upon. IT is being asked to pull every lever it can to SPEED innovation and respond faster to the business, all while doing it fewer resources, both budget and people. [BUILD 3] Third, every business is navigating a rapid pace of change. Change is the new normal. Amidst this change, the risk of doing nothing or not taking risk can often be much more expensive and detrimental to the business. Our customers are shifting from balancing cost and risk, to reducing the cost of taking risks. For IT, the cloud gives them a platform for supporting new ideas and opportunities in ways they never could before. The cloud has emerged as a way to more effectively meet rapidly changing business needs. Every IT organization is trying to determine how they can move quickly and confidently to a future where the cloud is core to their strategy. The next wave is the biggest
Virtualisation Engineering Home Dirs Database Public / Private Cloud, IaaS Next Generation AFAs Cheap and Deep Performance and Capacity Performance at any cost Number of Applications First Generation AFAs Situation: Flash has historically been deployed for performance workloads. The market for this is important but small. The next generation of flash make it economically feasible to support the less performance sensitive apps which are the bulk of data center applications on Flash. This includes Virtualization, Home directories, Engineering workloads, IaaS, Tier 2 databases. These workloads have always been a strength of NetApp. It’s where our unified capabilities have the most value. Archival workloads can still be put cost –effectively on disk but we see that left bar rapidly moving to the left. Takeaway: The market is going to explode, it is in a NetApp sweet spot, you are perfectly positioned for this. Low Performance High Gartner: Select SSAs for all primary applications and workloads, but do not restrict their usage for other applications.” © 2017 NetApp, Inc. Growing Use Cases for All-Flash
High performance, improved cost dynamics and feature rich solutions, driving flash adoption 2014 Database, Analytics & Business Apps Virtual Servers & Cloud Virtual Desktops & DAAS FlexPod Workload Consolidation, Next-Gen Apps, Enterprise Grade Features Database, VDI and virtual server workloads continue to dominate all-flash deployments However several new trends have emerged There is increasing awareness secondary economic benefits of flash Reduced energy and floor space requirements due to fewer drives. Reduced application licensing costs, due to fewer servers Most enterprises want to move more workloads to flash As a result we are seeing a lot of next generation apps like Splunk and MongoDB moving to flash Market requirements are also shifting towards mixed workload consolidation. That is where you have traditional business apps moving to all-flash. 2017+ © 2017 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. NetApp Proprietary – Limited Use Only © 2015 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. Maserati (AFF): High performance and comfort Fined tuned to deliver performance + features, yet, it wont help you to win in a F1 race! Bullet Train (SolidFire) : If you are a normal customer, you just buy a ticket to use a seat, you wont buy the entire train, it is not the fastest, but for sure it will guarantee you will reach on time without delay or being stuck in traffic. When you but ticket, there is 1st of 2nd class tickets, but you don’t need to learn how to drive the locomotive if you buy the train, you will are a railway company! (service provider), you will sell tickets from different classes to your customers. You will need it highly scalable, reliable and cost effective © 2017 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved. Dramatically change data center economics
1PB of storage <1ms latency performance to all data 11 times smaller footprint: 5U vs. 2+ racks 11 times lower power consumption No tuning for performance 6-month payback 10K high-performance HDDs 2+ racks 1 PB in 2U shelf, using 15TB SSDs 5U NetApp® AFF + ONTAP® $200B Healthcare company Dramatically changed datacenter economics with AFF: 120+ floor tiles down to only 8 Large auto parts company Saves $20K/month using AFF with 15TB SSD Replace 5 cabinets with 4 shelves Flash radically changes data center economics Setup: As flash evolves, the impact on the data center is huge. Often when a transformation technology gains adoption, you can physically see the impact in the data center. You could see that with virtualization as the server footprint shrank as IT consolidated. You will see that with flash to an even greater degree. It radically changes data center economics: Let’s compare 1PB of both HDD and the new 15TB drives (384TB with 4:1 efficiencies). The differences are stark. Let’s start with the footprint. Multiple racks are reduced to a 2U shelf and a controller. The power usage drops by 11 times (MWH/yr = megawatt hours per year). Takeaway: The impact is broader than price. It’s going to change the look, design, and cost structure of data centers. © 2017 NetApp, Inc.
