1 Corrosion Resistant Materials in Virginia
Workshop on Corrosion Management for Sustainable Bridges Tuesday, December 10, Thursday, December 12, 2013 Stephen R. Sharp, Ph.D., PE. Senior Research Scientist, VCTIR and H. Celik Ozyildirim, Ph.D., PE. Principal Research Scientist, VCTIR

2 Background Efforts have been initiated to improve the corrosion resistance of deck reinforcing steel in Virginia bridges. Success in this effort has let to looking at improving the corrosion resistance of other materials

3 Project Rational and Overview
Verify Carbon Fiber Composite Cable (CFCC) can replace traditional steel strands in bridge piles. 24-in Piles 2 bents 16 strands/ pile 2 test piles will be fabricated using CFCC (carbon fiber composite cable) in place of traditional steel strand and spiral Upon successfully fabricating and driving of 2 test piles, 16 more piles will be fabricated and driven All piles will be place along West Neck Creek as part of the VDOT Nimmo Parkway project in Virginia Beach, VA

4 Overview of CFCC and Cast Area for Test Pile

5 Preparing CFCC Reinforce Piles
Strand Coupled Stressing Tie Spiral Support Forms Blow Forms Clean

6 Concrete Placement and Finished Piles

7 Outcome Two CFCC test piles were cast and successfully driven
Additional CFCC piles were fabricated Additional CFCC piles await placement in Nimmo Parkway project
