2016- the year in review

2 What we tried to accomplish
Your Board’s Goals for 2016 Get more club members out CATCHING fish enhance trout fishing in our lakes and rivers Organize More events for club members Encourage members to volunteer per club constitutional goals Grow club awareness with like-minded community organizations Improve communication and information TO OUR MEMBERS educational courses DESIGNED FOR LAKES, RIVERS, AND BEACHES Stabilize the Financial well-being of the club

3 Our Constitution To practice and promote the sport of fishing with artificial flies To practice and promote the research, conservation and enhancement of all sport fish in BC To support and encourage the preservation and enhancement of lakes, streams and beaches nd the access hereto for the practice of fishing with artificial flies To encourage fellowship, ethics, and sportsmanship among anglers Per instructions from BC Registry, this will be registered as our constitution shortly. Ken Handy is handling this project

6 Educational Seminar Fly-fishing in Still-waters Phil Rowley March, 2016
Serious education by one of Canada’s top professionals The Phil Rowley all-day seminar was a sell-out attended by 65 people Phil is a well known lake specialist who covered a wide variety of fishing for trout in still-waters Organized by the Castaways, The seminar made $850 for the club coffers

7 SUMMER BBQ 126 ATTENDED AND FUN WAS HAD BY ALL
THE CLUB NETTED OVER $1,200, ALMOST $5,000 IN PRIZES DONATED FOOD DONATED BY LOCAL STORES TERRIFIC WAY TO MEET OTHER MEMBERS OVERHEAD DRONE SHOT BY CHRIS BRUCKSHAW

8 Fly Film Festival 137 tickets were sold to watch the “best of the best” in fly fishing short videos It was a first-time learning experience but well worth the effort and the club netted $1,240 dollars

9 Christmas Lunch at Cuckoos
The club held it’s annual Christmas party at Cuckoo’s Restaurant in Coombs At 25 dollars per person it was great value and a good way to socialize The club donated it’s share of the 50/50 draw and donated food to the food bank

10 Gord, Rob, & Al at Gracie Lake
2016 Fish-out Program In 2016 proved very popular among club members In 2017 this program will tie in with our new education courses and allow members to target both trout and salmon Fish-outs will follow each course completion and led by our course instructors Additional fish-outs will be added through-out the lake, river & beach fishing seasons Gord, Rob, & Al at Gracie Lake

11 Castaway Members Help Cleanup Shelly Creek!
Here we are playing in the mud helping Mid- Vancouver Island Habitant Enhancement Society 13 club members turned out to assist in the clean up and smolt counting of Shelly Creek which runs into the Englishman River 4,200 Coho smolts were counted in Shelly Creek this year

12 2017 Projects Underway

13 Education Advisory Committee
Committee is designing courses for relatively new fishers to intermediate level fishers covering Lakes, Rivers, & Beaches Each course will be followed by an instructor-led fish-out Past-President - Dan Hudson (Chair) Board Director - Keith Hyett John Beaven – Canada’s Gold Medal Commonwealth Fly-fishing Coach Fly-tying courses will be added early in 2017 How fortunate we are to have such talent in our club

14 Project is under way with the Fish & Wildlife branch
Adopt a Lake program This program has the potential to be the most exciting project the club has ever been involved with. Think exciting fly-fishing for trophy rainbows in a local lake! Project is under way with the Fish & Wildlife branch Rowbotham Lake

15 The Buddy System In keeping with the ideal of “getting more members out fishing” Needs to be organized more in 2017 We need volunteers to take people out fishing Ideally we can organize this to include fish- outs Contact Shelly to register on the web-site

16 Project Healing Waters
Our club has agreed to help teach veterans/soldiers/sailors/airmen living in our area how to fly-fish, tie flies, etc Veterans in our area will be able to benefit from the meditative and healing properties of fly fishing and fly-tying

17 New Web-Site & Face book Page
New look, Schedule of Events, more current up to date info, Lake Guide Facebook is a great way to quickly engage members Web-site & Face-book attracting more & more attention

18 Interesting Tidbits! Castaways member wins Gold!
In October 2016, John Beaven coached the Canadian fly-fishing team to the world commonwealth fly-fishing championship! John has represented Canada at eight world fly-fishing championships and holds the record for the most fish caught in Canadian fly-fishing tournament history He is keenly interested in helping our club in the adopt-a-lake program and is a member of our Education Advisory Committee

19 Membership Membership expires December 31st of each year
It’s now renewal time! Please see Shelly to renew January 1, 2016, 84 members January 1, 2017, 132 members (most in the last 6 months) Members can now use Pay Pal to renew Face book and our volunteers have raised awareness of our club Schedule of events on the website

20 Membership Benefits Interesting/educational speakers at our meetings and seminars Fly-fishing courses for lake, river, beach fishing, and fly-tying Opportunity to meet up with like minded people and go fishing together (fish outs & buddy system) It feels good to volunteer and give back to the community New-comers to the mid-island can be shown where, how, and when to fish

21 Recommended 2017 Board & Committee Structure
Executive Board: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Past-President Directors: six, they may be elected or appointed, each to chair a club activity Activity Chairs: Education Committee; Community Liaison (1); Adopt –a – Lake Committee; Summer BBQ & Christmas Lunch Committee; Seminars & Guest Speakers (1); Monthly Meeting organization - clothing, library, 50/50, refreshments Directors may sit on more than one committee Many hands make light work, please volunteer and get involved in whatever interests you

22 Nominations for the 2017 Board
Nine board positions open for election at the AGM February 21st, 2017 President, vice president, secretary, and six director positions Each directors will be given a committee to chair. Directors are elected or appointed for a 1-year term Treasurer ‘s position has one year left after the election in 2016 to a two-year term The Secretary’s position is for a two-year term ending in 2018 The 2016 President sits on the 2017 board as Past-President The 2016 Vice-President heads the nominating committee which will recommend people for each elected position Anyone wishing to put their name up to run for the board, please contact Nomination Chair: Ken Handy at
