VERB MEANING EXAMPLES To rise To get up Farmers rise early. To raise To lift, move, increase Mr. Laski raises corn. To lie To rest, recline, remain A dog lies in the cornfield. To lay To put something down Workers have laid sprinklers down. To sit To be seated Mr. Laski sits on the tractor. To set To place or put Set the corn on the truck.

3 Yes, they’re similar. But the meanings are different. If you use a word that SOUNDS similar, but is the wrong word, it’s still the wrong word. You may as well be saying something else entirely. Try it out – page 151 numbers 1-15 in your notes.

4 Remember: don’t confuse rise and raise; don’t confuse lie and lay; don’t confuse sit and set.
