2. Metaphor A comparison that does not use any connecting words.
Ex: The teacher is a mother hen.

3. Personification Ex: Goldfish, the snack that smiles back
Giving an object or animal human qualities. Making it act like a “person.”
Ex: Goldfish, the snack that smiles back
Ex: The sky cried for her that day.

4. Idiom
An expression whose meaning is not anything like it sounds, but we still use it in the English language.
Ex: It’s raining cats and dogs.
Ex: He’s a chip off the old block.

5. Hyperbole
The use of exaggeration to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally.
Ex: We’ve been in school forever!

6. Alliteration
Same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
Ex: Sam the Snake slithered slowly.

7. Denotation of a word: The dictionary definition of that word.
Ex: Chicken- A bird that lays eggs

8. Connotation of a word:
What that words means to you; the emotional meaning the word has.
Ex: If you call someone a “chicken,” it has a negative connotation (meaning they’re afraid of something)
