You have an idea of you want to work with Read some of their papers so you know what they are working on Contact them and say you’re interested in their work and ask about the possibility of working with them You don’t know who you want to work with Search papers in the area you’re interested in and try to identify 2 or 3 people who’s work you find interesting (Web of Knowledge; Science Direct, etc.) Check out webpages of labs working in the area you’re interested in Read some of papers by the people you identify has potential supervisors so you know what they are working on

Think about what you want to do in the future (beyond the PhD) Talk to current PhD students and ask them about their experience Talk to your lecturers and get their advice Do your research on: Potential universities (university websites have a lot of information for potential students) Potential Supervisors (look at their webpages and read some of their papers) Living expenses and social life where you want to go (it’s not just about the university, life outside university is also important) Visa requirements (if going abroad) Fellowships and other sources of funding Requirements for a PhD & application process Work on your CV and interview skills Develop any funding application and project plan in conjunction with your future supervisor
