4 Making Business Work Office Application Suites
Include several applications designed to work together Enable collaboration Save files in multiple formats An office suite refers to a bundle of several individual applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, and personal information manager. The bundled applications are designed to work together, which permits the sharing of files and thus supports collaboration. Additionally, office suites have the ability to save files in multiple formats; this makes them compatible with other products or older software versions. Examples of office suites include Microsoft Office, Apple iWork, and Apache OpenOffice. Objective 1 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

Making it Personal Individuals can choose between commercial and open source software Commercial Software Expensive Sold as suites or individual applications Open Source Software No fee Source code is published and made available to the public Anyone can copy, modify, and redistribute it without paying fees For personal use, an individual can purchase commercial software or make use of open source software. Commercial software is software for which an individual pays a fee. Open source software is software for which the source code is published and made available to the public. This enables anyone to copy, modify, and redistribute it without paying fees. Apache OpenOffice is a free, open source alternative office suite available in Windows, Mac, and Linux versions. 20 Assess a Computer System for Software Compatibility
Objective 3 discusses how to assess your computer system to determine software compatibility and how to determine system requirements for potential software purchases. Objective 3 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

21 Will It Run? Your System Specs
Specific hardware and software information about a computer system System specifications are the hardware and software information about a computer system. The file explorer displays the devices and drives on your system and also indicates the amount of total space and free space on each. Objective 3 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

22 Will It Run? System Requirements
Minimum hardware and software specifications the computer must meet to run the program System requirements refer to the minimum hardware and software qualifications required to run a specific application. Exceeding the minimum system requirements will usually result in better performance especially if the application is a game. Objective 3 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

23 Compare Various Ways of Obtaining Software
Objective 4 discusses the various ways to obtain software. It also defines and differentiates between proprietary and open source software licenses and defines retail, freeware, shareware, and donationware software. Objective 4 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

24 Where to Get It Licensing
Proprietary License Grants a license Ownership remains with the software publisher Found on most commercial software Most restrictive in terms of distribution and installation Open Source License Grants ownership Source code must be freely available Can be modified and redistributed Licenses on purchased software fall under two categories: proprietary and open source. A proprietary software license grants the use of one or more copies of the software, but ownership of those copies remains with the software publisher. An open source software license grants ownership of the copy to the end user. This means that its source code must be freely available and the end user has the right to modify and redistribute under the same license. Objective 4 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

25 Where to Get It Free or Fee
Four models for software distribution: Retail: user pays fee to use software for unlimited time Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, TurboTax Freeware: can be used at no cost for unlimited time Apple iTunes, 7-Zip, Evernote Shareware: allows you to try before you buy Microsoft, Adobe Donationware: developers accept donations Apache OpenOffice There are four methods of software distribution. Retail software, purchased through a retail store, allows the user to pay a fee and use the software for an unlimited time. Freeware software can be used at no cost for an unlimited period of time. Shareware is software offered for a trial or limited period, permitting a user to try before buying. Donationware is a form of freeware for which developers accept donations. 26 Discuss the Importance of Cloud Computing
Objective 5 defines cloud computing and discusses its importance. It also differentiates among Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS), Platform-as-a-Service (PAAS), and Software-as-a-Service (SAAS). Objective 5 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

27 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc.
Cloud Computing Takes processing and storage off desktop and puts it in the cloud Companies are known as Cloud Service Providers (CSP) Cloud computing shifts the processing and storage to the cloud, or Internet. Companies that deliver these services are known as a Cloud Service Providers (CSP). Objective 5 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

28 Discuss the Importance of Cloud Computing
Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) The use of servers in the cloud Reduces the cost for hardware, software and personnel With Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), a company uses servers in the cloud instead of purchasing and maintaining them. This reduces costs for hardware, software, and support personnel. Objective 5 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

29 Discuss the Importance of Cloud Computing
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) Provides an environment to develop, test, and deploy custom web apps Facilitates collaboration between developers Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provides a programming environment to develop, test, and deploy custom web applications. This gives businesses the ability to build, deploy, and manage SaaS applications. PaaS also makes collaboration easier and requires less programming knowledge than traditional programming tools. Objective 5 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

30 Discuss the Importance of Cloud Computing
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) The delivery of applications over the Internet – or web apps Most visible to users (access to and Facebook) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) involves the delivery of applications over the Internet—or web apps. Of the cloud services, SaaS is the most visible to the user. Objective 5 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

31 Install, Uninstall, and Update Software
Objective 6 discusses installing, uninstalling, and updating software. Objective 6 Copyright © 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. <#>

32 Install, Uninstall, and Update Software
Copying files to a computer that may alter settings and create new files Uninstall Proper removal of files, folders, and settings associated with a program Update Editing software already installed to add features, fix a bug, improve compatibility, or increase the levels of a game When software is installed, files are copied to a computer; system settings may be altered and new folders created. Regular releases to a program that can address security holes or bugs, add new features, improve compatibility, or increase the levels of a game are called updates. When a program is no longer used on a system, it needs to be uninstalled; this procedure removes all files, folders, and settings associated with that program.
