Ear Pain How? Winter weather and the accompanying coughs and sniffles can all too often lead to ear pain and ear infections. Thankfully, most ear infections get better without treatmentt i.e., antibiotics are not required. In fact, clinical studies have noted that the most commonly prescribed antibiotic, amoxicillin, is no more effective than a placebo. That said, they can still be pretty uncomfortable. I've put together a list of home remedies for earaches to help relieve ear pain.clinical studies have noted that the most commonly prescribed antibiotic, amoxicillin, is no more effective than a placebo

Onions Onions are a preferred remedy in the book Be Your Own Doctor and with some of the folks on Earth Clinic. Some people simply cut an onion in half and place it over the affected ear. Others gently heat a small portion of the onion until warm but not soft, and tuck the heated onion into the ear. Some people wrap the onion in a warm, moist cloth, others use it directly on the ear. Another option is to squeeze out some onion juice, heat gently, and put a few drops into the ear. Recommended compress time seems to be around 10-15 minutes, or until the onion cools. Rest quietly while treating.Be Your Own DoctorEarth Clinic

Garlic Garlic has both antibiotic and pain-relieving properties. One study found that eardrops containing garlic, among other ingredients, were just as effective as over- the-counter eardrops. Soak crushed garlic for several minutes in warm olive or sesame oil. Strain the garlic out and apply the oil into the ear canal. One study

Mullein Oil Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is used for treating respiratory ailments and many other illnesses. (See Weekly Weeder #13 – Common Mullein for more info.) As an ear treatment, infuse the flowers and buds in olive oil, then apply them to the ear in the same manner as the garlic oil above.Weekly Weeder #13 – Common Mullein To infuse the flowers in oil, gather enough blooms to partially fill a small jar. Cover with olive oil and let sit for a week or two. Strain and place in a tinted bottle. You can watch a video showing how to gather mullein flowers below. I like to let my blossoms set in a shallow bowl or on a plate for an hour or so before putting them in a jar with oil to give any buggies hiding in them a chance to escape.

Apple Cider Vinegar Mix together equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water/alcohol and soak a cotton ball into this mixture. Leave it plugged onto your ear for 5-7 minutes- then remove the cotton ball and lie on the opposite side, so as to remove all the liquid from the ear that may have entered the ear canal.

Hot Herbal Tea While you're applying warmth from the outside, you can also apply warmth from the inside. Echinacea, German chamomile, and holy basil are herbs that promote healing and relaxation.Echinacea

Olive oil The use of olive oil for earaches is a folk remedy. There’s no hard scientific evidence to prove that drops of olive oil in your ear canal can soothe ear pain. But putting a few warmed drops of olive oil in the ear is safe and could be moderately effective, according to AAP. It’s still a good idea to discuss this method with your doctor first, especially for children.AAP Make sure the olive oil is no warmer than your body temperature by using a thermometer. This will help you avoid burning the eardrum.

Tea tree oil Tea tree oil has powerful antifungal, antiseptic, anti- inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. These can be applied as ear drops to reduce pain and discomfort. If you’re worried about sensitivity, you can mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a small amount of olive oiantiseptic, anti- inflammatory

Ginger Ginger has natural anti- inflammatory properties that can help soothe pain from earaches. Apply ginger juice, or strained oil that was warmed with ginger in it, around the outer ear canal. Do not put it directly into the ear.

Basil: Extract the juice from 4-5 holy basil leaves by crushing them, and apply this juice directly around the infected ear. Make it a point to avoid letting this juice get into the ear canal. Prepare holy basil oil by crushing a few leaves and mixing it with a carrier oil like coconut oil, and warming it gently. Now soak a cotton ball into this basil oil mixture and wipe it around the outside and the reachable inside of the ear, preferably twice a day.
