2 Osteoporosis Def: is a disease where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone. Osteoporosis consist of two words: Osteo: means Bone Porosis: means porous Osteoporosis: affects 10 of millions of people each year, especially those over 50. Bones that commonly break include: the back bone, wrist, and the hip.

3 Common causes Vitamin D deficiency Calcium deficiency Smoking and alcoholism Malnutrition Heredity Certain medication e.g. corticosteroids Sign and symptoms Osteoporosis is no s/s until fracture of bone A bone fracture after a minor injury such as a fall Back pain, caused by a fractured

4 Risk factors Your sex. Women are much more likely to develop osteoporosis than men Age. The older age is more risk of osteoporosis Race. If you're white or of Asian Family history. Your mother or father experienced a hip fracture. Diagnose Special X-ray machines to check your bone density. A DEXA scan can confirm osteoporosis.

5 Prevention of osteoporosis Get enough calcium Get enough vitamin D Stop smoking Stop Drink alcohol Exercise Treatment Anti Pain e.g. Ibuprofen 400mg tablet Group of Bisphosphonates e.g. Alendronate tabletAlendronate
