4 “Inside Out and Back Again” Remember the pictures and sentences we made inferences and had discussion about in class? The novel we are going to read is about what was happening in those pictures and sentences!

5 QUOTE “No one would believe me, but at times I would prefer wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama” (page 195). Based on what you saw in the pictures and the sentences, what do you think would make a person say the quote above? Be ready to share.

6 Look at the Novel What do you notice right away? Is it similar to other things you have read? Is it different? GRIT your way through this novel!

7 Things Close Readers Do Read “1975 The Year of the Cat” silently to yourself. Think: What is the gist of this poem? Infer: To infer is to take something you notice in a text and connect it to something you already know. Write down as many inferences as you can about Ha.
