Be Magnified I have made You too small in my eyes Oh Lord, forgive me; Lynn DeShazo © 1992 Integrity’s Hosanna! Music ARR UBP – CCLI License No. 378119

And I have believed in a lie That You were unable to help me.

But now, O Lord, I see my wrong Heal my heart and Show Yourself strong

And in my eyes and with my song; Lord, be magnified Oh Lord, be magnified

Be magnified, Oh Lord You are highly exalted; And there is nothing You can’t do

Oh Lord, my eyes are on You Be magnified Oh Lord be magnified

I have leaned on the wisdom of men Oh Lord, forgive me; And I have responded to them Instead of Your light and Your mercy.

But now, O Lord, I see my wrong Heal my heart and Show Yourself strong

And in my eyes and with my song; Lord, be magnified Oh Lord, be magnified

Be magnified, Oh Lord You are highly exalted; And there is nothing You can’t do

How great the pain of searing loss; The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory. How great the pain of searing loss; The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers.

It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in any thing, No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. I will not boast in any thing, No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms. I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh. Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh.

Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth Is to feel your need of Him. Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth Is to feel your need of Him.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry ‘til you’re better, You will never come at all. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry ‘til you’re better, You will never come at all.

The Ministry of John the Baptist Matthew 3:1-12, Mark 1:1-8, Luke 3:1-18 In the 15th year of Tiberius Caesar (~26A.D.), Israel was oppressed & had not had a prophet in 400 years Nothing had yet come from the miracles reported 30 years before,  but there was still hope for a Messiah

The Voice Crying in the Wilderness Matthew 3:1-6; Mark 1:2-6; Luke 3:3-6) John, a Levite, was at least 30 - the age a priest began ministry, and had the characteristics of a prophet John came in fulfillment of Isaiah 40:1-5 (Matthew 3:3; Mark 2:1; Luke 3:4; John 1:23) John is speaking because the word of God had come to him (Luke 3:2 cf. Isaiah 40:1)

The Voice Crying in the Wilderness Matthew 3:1-6; Mark 1:2-6; Luke 3:3-6) John is calling from the wilderness (Luke 3:2 cf. Isaiah 40:3) John’s message of repentance was the means to “make ready the way of the Lord” (Matthew 3:2; Isaiah 40:3) John fulfilled the prophecy of Malachi 3:1 as the Messiah’s herald (Mark 1:2)

The Voice Crying in the Wilderness Matthew 3:1-6; Mark 1:2-6; Luke 3:3-6) John’s manner of dress and diet were in keeping with the prophets (Matthew 3:4; cf. Zechariah 13:4; 2 Kings 1:8) John was a man of great self-control - a quality that should be developed by every Christian (Galatians 5:21) John lived for the Lord because he was filled with the Spirit - as should be all Christians (Ephesians 5:18)

The Message of the Herald Matthew 3:1-2, 5-6; Mark 1:4-5; Luke 3:3 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand Repentance has been part of the message of the Jewish prophets throughout history bwv / shub (to return) & mjn / nacham (to regret something / repent) - metanoevw / metanoeō & metavnoia / metanoia = change of mind / regret / conversion

The Message of the Herald Matthew 3:1-2, 5-6; Mark 1:4-5; Luke 3:3 As used by John and Jesus = “new expression to the ancient concept of religious & moral conversion.” You cannot return to trust the Lord if you do not turn from false beliefs Outward obedience is not enough - God wants the heart (Deuteronomy 6:4-6; 10:12-16)

The Message of the Herald Matthew 3:1-2, 5-6; Mark 1:4-5; Luke 3:3 John’s call to repentance (to turn to trust & obey the Lord) was to:  apostates,  the religious,  the ignorant

The Message of the Herald Matthew 3:1-2, 5-6; Mark 1:4-5; Luke 3:3 Repentance was the message of John, Jesus & the apostles (Matthew 4:17; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30; 26:19-20; Romans 2:4; 2 Cor. 7:9,10; 12:21; 2 Timothy 2:25; Hebrews 6:1; 2 Peter 3:9; Revelation 2:5,16,21-22; 3:3,19)

The Nature of Repentance It is contrary to the gospel to equate repentance with turning from sin in order to qualify for salvation The nature of belief requires a change of mind to change the manner of life Repentance is a response to God’s work - 2 Corinthians 7:9-10; John 16:18; 2 Tim. 2:25-26; John 6:44

The Nature of Repentance Many people made the difficult journey to hear John’s message and be baptized by him (Matt. 3:5-6) John’s baptism of repentance was not ceremonial cleansing, but closer to proselyte baptism

The Fruit of Repentance Matthew 3:7-10; Luke 7-14 Matthew 3:7-10 - John was not trying to win friends, but prepare people for the coming of the Messiah John was abrasive with the Pharisees & Scribes for they were the ones leading the people astray A truly changed heart would be demonstrated by the fruit of repentance - blood lineage cannot save

The Fruit of Repentance Matthew 3:7-10; Luke 7-14 Luke 3:10-14 - practical examples of the fruit of repentance:  Sharing what you have with those in need  Being honest in your work  Being content with what you have & not stealing from / lying about others

Conclusions God is still calling everyone everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30) 1)God really does exist and will hold you accountable for everything you have ever done 2)The claims about the person & work of Jesus Christ are true

Conclusions 3)You cannot earn you way into God’s favor 4)You must trust in the person & work of Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness and salvation from sin 5)True repentance (change of mind) will have a corresponding change of behavior
