How does your breakfast weigh in??? By: Craig Borduin Tyler Johnson

Why Cereal ??? One day at breakfast, Tyler was curious about whether consumers are getting the bang for their buck when buying cereals. He wanted to know if there was a positive correlation between cereal prices and their box weights.

Study Design SRS of 20 cereals Collected data for the prices and weights of said cereals Used Correlation - Correlation (r)- measures the direction and strength of the linear relationship between two quantitative variables

Collected Data CerealPrice ($)Wt. (oz) Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch 2.7820.7 Cracklin’ Oat Bran 3.5017 Frosted Flakes 2.6817 Trix 2.6814.8 Toasted Rice 2.1612.8 CerealPrice ($)Wt. (oz) Rice Krispies 3.5018 Honey Bunches 2.5014.5 Wheaties 3.6415.6 Cap’n Crunch 2.7822 Fiber One 3.6417.25 CerealPrice ($)Wt. (oz) Corn Chex 2.0014 Fruity Cheerios 2.6812 Lucky Charms 3.9816 Cocoa Puffs 1.9810.7 Special K Blueberry 3.8815.5 CerealPrice ($)Wt. 5 Cereal Scatter Plot r= 0.46

Calculations of Correlation #1=… After gathering the sum of 20 cereals, we calculated the r value --> r= 0.46

Conclusion An r-value of 0.46 does not show a strong correlation between cereal box weights and their prices. We conclude that the name brand, not the box weight, formulates the price of the cereal. Because Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch contains peanut butter flavors, it is relevant to say that it would be more expensive in weight than regular Cap’n Crunch.
