THE POWER OF HABIT Charles Duhigg Report by Jake Holsinger

EUGENE PAULY  Suffered from viral encephalitis that spread to the brain  Could not remember a conversation he had 10 minutes ago  Nurse took him out on the same walk every day. Eventually he went on the same walk on his own  Could not remember a conversation but did not get lost on his walk  Sparked interest in studying the idea of a habit

LARRY SQUIRE  52 year old scientist that studied Eugene  Ran tests on Eugene that tested his memory and compared them to childhood habits  Failed at drawing the map of his house but went to the bathroom without hesitation

THE HABIT LOOP  The basal ganglia is where habits are stored  A test was done on mice while monitoring brain activity  The first test required the brain to work hard the entire time  Once the test was done so often it became a habit  The brain activity decreased when the task was being done  The automatic routine is called “chunking”

THE HABIT LOOP  A “cue” is what triggers the habit  Then there is the routine  Then finally the reward  Ex. a click starts the mouse in the maze  The routine is finding its way through the maze  The reward is a piece of chocolate

THE CRAVING BRAIN  Most habits do not occur without one craving the reward  Ex. When students do homework with their phone next to them  The “cue” is the vibrate or ring for a text  The routine is to read and reply  The reward is the satisfaction of the craving for a distraction

DRAKE STIMSON  In charge of selling a product called “Febreeze”  Could not find a way to make Febreeze an every day cleaner  Used the idea of a craving brain  The “cue” was the need to clean the house  The routine was the actual cleaning  The reward was the clean scent that gave the satisfaction of a clean room

THE GOLDEN RULE  Habits cannot just disappear but they can be changed  The only way to change habits is to keep the same “cue” and reward  And change the routine

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS (AA)  Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) uses this rule  Most addicts have an urge to use (cue), then they use (routine), then they feel stress-free (reward)  AA replaces the routine with group meetings  The only way habits are changed permanently is by believing they can be changed

TONY DUNGY  Used the golden rule in his years as an NFL coach  Took the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from consistent losing records to a consistent playoff team  However, when the most crucial parts of the season arrived, the Buccaneers quit believing in the rule !  Dungy was fired by the Bucs and hired by the Indianapolis Colts  Unfortunately, the suicide of his son, Jaime Dungy, was what created a want to win for Coach Dungy  The Colts believed in the golden rule and went on to win the super bowl in 2007 !
