KA1 activities in the first year Definition of draft research roadmaps Collection of information on robotics research in Europe

Predicting the future? Definition of draft research roadmaps

How to formulate research roadmaps An example: NEXUS (the European Network of Excellence in Multifunctional Microsystems) funded by EU DG III

Example of NEXUS results: roadmap for ink-jet technology

Definition of draft research roadmaps Proposed “EURON Model” for preparing the Research Roadmaps: –To agree on a long term (10 years or more) vision of the future of robotics and mechatronics –To identify classes of new products –To identify the building blocks of such new products –To identify the research needed to implement such building blocks and systems

Proposed EURON steps EURON (roadmaps) DemonstratorsDemonstratorsMarketMarket EU V FP 1998-2002 EU V FP 1998-2002 EU VI FP 2003-2007 EU VI FP 2003-2007 2010 Establishing clusters of excellence on the building blocks and defining roadmaps

Definition of draft research roadmaps Proposed method for implementing this “EURON model” –STEP 1. Agree on a vision for the future, through brainstorming. –STEP 2. Define enabling research, keeping into account technological, social and economical motivations and constraints. For each building block: identify leading groups within EURON establish clusters of excellence and networks define roadmaps for research –STEP 3. Plan new projects for developing European pre-competitive demonstrators

‘Old industry’ A ten-year perspective vision The (“real”) New Economy (integration) Automotive Aircraft other traditional products ‘New ICT industry’ Networks Internet appl.s Evolution of traditional products New ICT applications Web services
