How do we deal with the fact that some atoms have several isotopes? The solution is to measure the mass of each individual isotope in the element and then calculate the weighted average. The weighted average is known as the atomic mass of the element

1. Atomic Mass Measured using the mass spectrometer The neutral atom of the isotope of carbon-12 is the appropriate standard Carbon-12 has a mass of 12 atomic mass units (12 amu) One atomic mass unit is 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom

2. Isotopes Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number (number of protons) but a different number of neutrons, and mass number Isotopes have the same chemical properties, but different physical properties (physical properties: boiling point, melting point, atomic mass, etc

3. How do you write the name of an isotope? C-12 or Carbon -12 C-14 or carbon-14 Chemical symbol and the mass number of the element. Is there any other way to write an isotope? Yes. Nitrogen with 8 neutrons may be written Nitrogen-15.

15 4. Calculating Atomic Mass Atomic mass = (mass isotope 1 ) (%) + (mass isotope 2 ) (%) + ………… 100 100

16 Exercise # 1 Gallium is a metallic element found in small lasers used in compact disc players. In a sample of gallium, there is 60.2% of gallium- 69 (68.9 amu) atoms and 39.8% of gallium-71 (70.9 amu) atoms. What is the atomic mass of gallium? Gallium-6968.9 amu60.2% Gallium-7170.9 amu39.8%

17 Solution Set up the problem: 68.9 amu x 60.2 + 70.9 amu x 39.8 100 100 Atomic mass Ga = 69.70 amu

18 Exercise # 2 Isotopes Mass of Isotope Abundance 24 Mg 24.0 amu 78.70% 25 Mg 25.0 amu 10.13% 26 Mg 26.0 amu 11.17% Find the atomic mass off Mg atom

24.0 amu x 78.70 + 25.0 amu x 10.13 + 26.0 amu x 11.17 100 100 100 = 24.3 amu
