9 Unidad 3: GUATEMALA La Meta: To be able to talk about the history and culture of Guatemala.  Guatemala: Located directly south of Mexico.  Is a gateway to Central America.  Colonized by Spain in 1511.  Eventually became a part of the Mexican Empire for 2 years.  Became a sovereign state from Spain in September 15 th, 1821.

12 Unidad 3: Antigua, GUATEMALA  Former colonial city in the central highlands.  Founded in 1543 with many buildings.  Great examples of Spanish colonial architecture.  Also known as “The City of Perpetual Roses.”  Many excellent language schools for foreigners.  Has buildings from the C16th up.

15 La ropa guatemalteca Mayans: divided into many groups. Each group with its own language and style of dress. About 20 indigenous populations. huipil Traditional costumes like the “huipil” expresses one’s heritage. Typical woven fabric and clothing are made in the traditional Mayan way.

18 The ancient Mayan city of Tikal  Built during the C4th BCE.  Used as one of the major cultural and population centers of the Mayan civilization.  Dominated the Mayan region between 200AD and 900AD.  After the city declined and was gradually abandoned.

19 El Quetzal: el ave de Guatemala  Name is from the Nahuatl language and means “large brilliant tail feather”  National bird of Guatemala.  Tail feathers: green and blue;  1 meter in length, in the male.  Feathers used in Mayan royal headwear.  Bright plumage.  Rarely seen in natural habitat.  For Mayans and Aztecs -a symbol of light and life.
