3 Modern World Languages Course Title: Spanish 1 - Novice Low – Novice High Course Number: 0708340 Credit: 1.00 Grade Level: 9-12 Course Level: 2 Major Concepts/Content: Spanish 1 introduces students to the target language and its culture. The student will develop communicative skills in all 3 modes of communication and cross-cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language. An introduction to reading and writing is also included as well as culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

4 Course Title: Spanish 2 - Intermediate Low – Intermediate Mid Course Course Number: 0708350 Credit: 1.00 Grade Level: 9-12 Course Level: 2 Major Concepts/Content: Spanish 2 reinforces the fundamental skills acquired by the students in Spanish 1. The course develops increased listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as cultural awareness. Specific content to be covered is a continuation of listening and oral skills acquired in Spanish 1. Reading and writing receive more emphasis, while oral communication remains the primary objective. The cultural survey of the target language-speaking people is continued.

5 Course Title: Spanish 3 – Intermediate High – Advanced Low Course Number: 0708360 Credit: 1.00 Grade Level: 9-12 Course Level: 3 Major Concepts/Content: Spanish 3 provides mastery and expansion of skills acquired by the students in Spanish 2. Specific content includes, but it is not limited to, expansions of vocabulary and conversational skills through discussions of selected readings. Contemporary vocabulary stresses activities which are important to the everyday life of the target language-speaking people.

6 Course Title: Spanish 4 –Advanced Low-Advanced Mid Course Number: 0708370 Credit: 1.00 Grade Level: 9-12 Course Level: 4 Major Concepts/Content: Spanish 4 expands the skills acquired by the students in Spanish 3. Specific content includes, but is not limited to, more advanced language structures and idiomatic expressions, with emphasis on conversational skills. There is additional growth in vocabulary for practical purposes, including writing. Reading selections are varied and taken from the target language newspapers, magazines, and literary works.

7 Sample Activity: Standard 3: Interpersonal Communication Essential Question: Can you talk about a past shopping experience? In pairs, students will take turns: 1.tell each others where they went 2.what articles of clothing they bought 3.describe all articles purchased 4.how much money they spent 5.make comparisons on how much they bought and spent WL.K12.IL.3.6 (DOK 2, 3) In groups of 4 1.Develop an activity using the standard and benchmark given to you. 1.Explain to the group how to implement the activity. 1.The group will discuss each activity and give constructive suggestions.
