3 WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID Financial aid helps students and their families pay for college. This financial assistance covers educational expenses including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation.

4 TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID 1.Grants  Gift aid that does not need to be repaid.  GPA and/or demonstrated talent  FAFSA, CSS Profile (Private Universities) 2.Scholarships  Does not need to be repaid.  GPA, Talent, Affiliations, Major/Career, Ethnicity, Need  FAFSA, CSS Profile (Private) and/or Scholarship Applications  Local Scholarship Workshop - Friday 10/28, Lunch, Little Theatre  Local Scholarship Program Deadline Friday, December 2nd.

5 TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID 3. Work Study  Money earned by student at a job that helps pay for educational expenses.  Based on need.  FAFSA, CSS Profile (Private) 4. Loans  Borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest.  Based on need.  FAFSA, CSS Profile (Private)

6 HOW CAN I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID? FAFSA CA DREAM ACT File the correct application OR Submit GPA verification form for CAL Grant consideration. THS Students DO NOT need to submit this. District sends GPA electronically. Has already been done! Submit any follow up documents that your college asks for.

7 FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)  Free Online Application - www.fafsa.ed.govwww.fafsa.ed.gov  Required for Federal and State fund eligibility  Must be US citizen or eligible non-citizen  Application opens October 1, 2016  Deadline to submit is March 2, 2017  PIN Number required for E-Signature  Each school has their own deadlines!

8 DREAM ACT APPLICATION  Online Application – www.caldreamact.orgwww.caldreamact.org  Must meet requirement of AB540  Must have attended a CA high school for at least 3 years  Graduate from a CA high school or equivalent  Attend qualifying CA college or university  Can also be considered for Cal Grants

11 OTHER SUPPLEMENTAL FORMS  Cal Grant GPA Verification Form  Supplement to FAFSA  Form NOT REQUIRED for THS students  GPAs sent electronically by district  Check www.csac.ca.gov to check on the submissionwww.csac.ca.gov  CSS Profile  May be requested by private schools.  Supplement to FAFSA  Consideration for nonfederal financial aid  Fee for each school. $25 initial, $16 each after. Fee waivers are available.

13 POST-APPLICATION SUBMISSION  Notification by Email  Student Aid Report  Summarizes info provided on FAFSA  Review and make corrections, if necessary  If based on estimate will be ask to update with actual information when taxes are filed  Check for rejects (PIN/Signature/eligibility checks)

14 FINANCIAL AID AWARD PACKAGE  Information from FAFSA taken to determine Expected Family Contribution (EFC)  Each school with create their own package.  Can be combination of grants, scholarships, loans or work-study.  Notify each school’s financial aid office of any special circumstances.  You can negotiate!

15 TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS  Make sure to use legal name and that your school records also match!  Make sure that you complete the FAFSA for the 17-18 year  Check school portal’s regularly and email junk or spam mail  Contact school’s financial aid office for individual questions/circumstances.  Document any and all communications with schools and especially financial aid office.
