ISRAELI - PALESTINIAN CONFLICT IN MAPS WORLD WAR I to Present-Day

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM AFTER WWI BRITISH & FRENCH: divided SW Asia into Mandates (areas of direct control & areas of “influence” with local government). IBN SAUD: given Arabian Pen (present-day Saudia Arabia & Yemen) JERUSALEM: international city

1947 UN PLAN of PARTITION FOR ISRAEL & PALESTINE 1 Palestinian State/1 Jewish State/ International City of Jerusalem  The treaty is rejected by what groups?  What does it mean to be a “stateless nation?”

NEW TERRITORIAL DIVISIONS AFTER ARAB-ISRAELI FIGHTING  Egypt controls Gaza Strip  Jordan controls West Bank and Eastern part of Jerusalem (contains holy sites)

1967: THE SIX-DAY WAR ISRAEL’S SWIFT & UNEXPECTED SUCCESS AFTER ARAB ATTACK  Israel captured Golan Heights, Sinai Pen., West Bank & Gaza Strip.  Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in 1979.

ISRAELI TAKEOVER OF JERUSALEM

THE COMPLICATED GAZA STRIP  Gaza: one of the most densely populated tracts of land in the world.  Home to 1,178,000 Palestinians (33% live in refugee camps) and 6,900 Jewish settlers (until Israeli Disengagement Plan). June, 2005 - Israeli military forcibly removed Jewish settlers from Gaza; area turned over to Palestinian Authority)

ISRAEL BUILT MANY SETTLEMENTS IN THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK  Currently, 59% of West bank officially under Israeli control.  23% under Palestinian civil control, but Israeli security control.  Remainder of territory is governed by Palestinian National Authority.

PALESTINIAN AREAS OF THE WEST BANK

TODAY  Much dispute, fighting & acts of terrorism over land and borders. Hamas and the PLO actively in conflict with Israel.  Today, Israel has control over 78% of former Palestine, rather than 55% allocated under initial UN Plan of Partition.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS  Many moderate Arabs want Israeli withdrawal to pre-1967 borders  Hamas (currently in power ) does not want a peace agreement, wants a single Palestinian state  2 States solution  1 State solution  Israel’s “land for peace” deals
