3 Class Schedule Tardy Bell: 7:40 am Specials: 10:00-10:55 (PE/Art/PE/Music/Library) Lunch/Recess: 11:50-12:35 Wakin & Shakin: Mondays at 7:40 in the Gym Character Assembly: Fridays at 7:40 in the Gym

4 Class Information Attendance: Please make sure your child is here every day, on time, as much as possible! If they are absent for any reason, any makeup work will be sent home and they will have as many days as they missed to work on these (i.e.., absent 2 days, they have 2 days to turn in their work). Unfinished Work: If there is classwork that is not completed during the school day, it will be sent home for homework that night and must be completed/returned the next day.

5 Class Information Transportation: If there is a change in transportation after school, please let the office know before 1:30 p.m. Unless we know, students will be sent home the way they usually are.

6 Class Information Snacks: Students can bring snacks for themselves to eat during the day. They cannot call home for snacks. Please do not send candy, soda, or items that require preparation.

7 Class Information Lunch: Menus are online. Students can choose from 3 options. Students are also able to purchase snacks. Please make sure you’ve explained to them how much/how often they can purchase these. There is an option to opt out of Snack Purchases. If you want to eat lunch with your child, please meet us at the cafeteria by 11:50. To avoid any problems, please do not invite other students from our class to sit with you.

8 Discipline Policy #1 Verbal warning #2 Loss of recess (no more than 5 minutes) #3 a note in Behavior Chart in Thursday folder #4 Phone call home from teacher #5 Sent to the office If the behavior is a danger to others or to themselves, they will be sent to the office straightaway. If behavior is continued on a daily basis, the student will be placed on a daily behavior chart.

9 Thursday Folders Class work and school notes will be in this folder. Graded papers– are not be recorded. Behavior log – PLEASE SIGN THESE. Folders need to come back emptied and signed on Fridays. *Unless necessary*

10 Homework Go home every Monday Class newsletter with Spelling list – if they get lost or misplaced, they will be available for download on our webpage. http://creek.mustangps.org http://creek.mustangps.org Reading log (please read with or listen to your child read for at least 20 minutes every night). Sometimes there will be a Math practice page, or unfinished work from the day.

11 Specials Schedule Mondays: PE Tuesdays: Art Wednesdays: PE Thursdays: Music Fridays: Library Please encourage your student to check out books that are a “good fit” for them. We check out 2 books: 1 “Free Choice” (no how-to-draw books) and 1 book they can READ aloud to you.

12 Personal Belongings Please write your child’s name on his or her coats, caps, sweaters, lunch boxes, or any other item. These often get lost or misplaced and are never claimed in the lost and found. Students should not bring toys, make-up, electronics, or valuable belongings.

13 Birthdays You may bring treats for your child’s birthday for the whole class. Please let me know in advance. ONLY store bought items (cupcakes or cookies) and drinks (only pouches, no soft drinks, please). Birthday celebrations will only be at 2:15. Birthday party invitations: If they are for the whole class, you may send them to school to be distributed. However, individualized invitations must be sent or given outside of school. They will not be handed out at school. Please ask me for a classroom directory when you need it.

14 Report Cards Mastery report cards Graded based on ability to master a skill with a 1, 2, 3, or 4. If your child is a 1 or 2 at the beginning of the year, that is not a cause for alarm --- we are focusing on GROWTH and PROGRESS.

15 2 nd Grade Curriculum Math – Everyday Math: a rigorous curriculum that teaches multiple strategies to solve problems. FACT FLUENCY IS VERY IMPORTANT!! 2 nd graders MUST be fluent in addition and subtraction facts! Practice as often as you can to increase automaticity.

16 2 nd Grade Curriculum ELA Focus on increasing fluency and comprehension By end of the year, students should be reading on (approximately 100 wpm) and have higher level reading skills (identifying main ideas, story elements, etc.)

17 2 nd Grade Curriculum ELA We will have Flex Groups in 2 nd grade. Students will receive small group instruction based on their needs according to the Aims Web testing data Writing We work on writing EVERY day. We will work on narrative, informative, and opinion pieces. Students are expected to construct a paragraph (topic sentence, details, closing sentence). By the end of the year, we hope to work on two paragraphs.

18 Aims Web Testing Begins September Reading (Oral Reading Fluency in 1 minute) Fall Benchmark: 53 words per minute Winter Benchmark: 77 words per minute Spring Benchmark: 100 words per minute

19 Projects and Reports Habitat Dioramas Pet Stories Research Reports (quite a few throughout the school year) – that may have to be researched at home and completed at school.
