Presidents Report Bob Reinovsky 30 July 2011

Standards Strength of IEEE Base of Technical Expertise Generally recognized as a-political Currently strong process (but could be competition) IEEE serving INDUSTRY Industry investment >> than IEEE investment Revenue to Societies? Financial return to societies motivate members to contribute?

Publication and Periodical Topics Periodicals IEEE has 146 Periodicals 110 Journals 36 Magazines Growing 3.1 periodicals per year Three titles in 2012 Currently 4-5 new titles in process. Some struggling for content Sunsetting, splits, mergers Posting of published papers on “personal” website IEEE becoming “less author friendly” Sponsor demands (eg NIH) Revenue impact?

Bundled Membership Model Adding a technical home for every member could improve retention. >85% retention among Society Members <65% retention w/o Tech Soc membership. Financial impact still being assessed Estimates range $600K adverse to $1600 positive FinCOM in August, Board of Directors in Fall, for 2013 Societies protected, initially Possible $5-15 impact on membership dues – (cost neutral) Bundling Every Society basic membership at $15 – One society membership bundled with IEEE membership Students can buy one society at half price Societies define what is included in BASIC membership Many Societies will choose to add ENHANCED membership Metrics of Success Retention of Higher Grade members (members are countable) Ratio of basic to enhanced -- number of upgrades Society membership per IEEE membership Chapter participation?

Fellows Program Fellow Processes; Reports to MGA, Chair, Vice Chair, 50 Member or Judges Fellows 1.8% of total population, 800 nominees per year Fellow class is 0.1% of membership, Acceptance 41% of nominees per year Nomination Process Society evaluation is high impact --Rank ordering, judging impact Rated by 50 Judges in group. Categories : Research Engineer/Scientist 70% of pool, Documentable searchable, verifiable Educator 10% University administrator – Text book, teaching method Technical Leader 10% Engineer management, Harder to document. Fewer publications Practitioner 10 % -- industry Even harder to document or to evaluate

Fellows Program (2) Industry vs Academic 60% academic vs 30% industry Acceptance % same both groups Fellow search sub-committee at Society level

IEEE Financial Picture is solid IEEE overall about 3M positive wrt Budget midway 2011 TA currently $2.6M unfavorable wrt Budget Authorize to use 50% of prior year surplus +3% of Reserves Spend critically Revenues Revenue membership falling off – membership increasing Increased membership Region 9-10 yield less revenue Societies seeing some “return of loan” for infrastructure Realistic projections should be a goal of budgeting process.
