1 Million Hearts®: Improving Cardiovascular Health Across Ohio Presenter Pat Brinkman, Kate Gawlik, Michelle Treber, Lisa Barlage, Elizabeth Smith, Jamie Seger In America, heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women. Two of the major risk factors for Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease) are high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Nearly half of United States’ adults have high blood pressure and about two out of three adults have high cholesterol levels. Annually cardiovascular disease is estimated to have $273 billion in direct costs and overall costs projected to be $444 billion. Centers for Disease Control thecommunityguide.org/cvd/ )thecommunityguide.org/cvd/ Million Hearts® is a national initiative designed to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by the year 2017. The Million Hearts® Initiative’s focus is to prevent heart disease by providing community health screenings and education on preventative lifestyle modifications. Method This Million Hearts®: Improving Cardiovascular Health Across Ohio curriculum is a peer-reviewed and IRB approved program consisting of a series of three classes providing information on how to reduce cardiovascular risk factors and help people make healthy behavior changes. Program Based on ABCS‘s The “ABCSs” are research-based recommendations to make the most impact on prevention or reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease. The Ohio State University College of Nursing will offer blood screening for participants enrolled in the local Million Hearts Program. The Million Hearts program will provide participants with information about their blood test results and make suggestions for lifestyle changes that can influence their risk of heart disease. The classes emphasize disease prevention and will provide participants with tools and suggestions for lifestyle changes. The program includes PowerPoint lessons and hand-on education such as food demonstration, sample tastings and stress techniques. Participants will be encouraged to make changes in eating habits, stress reduction, physical activity and smoking behaviors. A pre and post-survey provides information on what the students have learned. A 6-month follow-up program will be encouraged to see if participants have made changes and if they are seeing any improvement in their blood screening results.
