5 CUBA What do we already know about Cuba? Why is its location significant? Why did the United States care about Cuba in 1898?

6 Cuba in the 1890’s Cuba was a Spanish colony In 1895, Cubans rebelled against the Spanish Spain responded by sending General Valeriano Weyler to put down the rebellion

7 General Valeriano Weyler General Weyler used the idea of “reconcentration” –Concentration = German concentration camps during WWII Poor food and sanitation Estimated 200,000 Cubans died

8 Americans upset! The U.S. was angry because the rebellions and death were hurting the American sugar plantations and mills

9 Joseph Pulitzer & William R. Hearst Both owned newspapers in New York Competition led them to exaggerating the stories of horror in Cubaexaggerating They called General Weyler “The Butcher” These stories made Americans angry about the way Cubans were treated by the Spanish America wanted war!

10 Yellow Journalism The exaggerating of stories with graphic descriptions became known as “yellow journalism”
