4 Why revise specifications? All awarding bodies must conform to the rules of the Regulatory Authorities. The shelf life of any specification is five years.

5 Why revise specifications? To ensure that content and assessment reflect the needs of learners and the needs of the society, economy and environment in which they live and work.

6 Why revise specifications? Our aim is to provide teachers, lecturers and tutors with top-class qualifications that are refreshingly relevant, stimulating and rewarding for their learners.

7 The process of revision Key activities have included: Identification of subject criteria in collaboration with QCA and all other UK regulatory bodies. Consultation and communication with stakeholders.

9 Key Changes Controlled assessment in all subjects except Religious Studies and Economics Unitisation in many subjects Quality of written communication (QWC), now embedded in the mark scheme

13 Controlled Assessment Tasks will be reviewed every two years to ensure that they continue to set an appropriate challenge and remain valid, reliable and stimulating The following skills will be assessed through controlled assessment: – design a product – engineer a product

14 Controlled Assessment Rules are defined for the three stages of the assessment: –Task setting –Task taking –Task marking

15 Task setting Candidates are required to complete a portfolio for: –Unit 1 – Engineering Design & Graphical Communication Candidates are required to complete an engineered product for: –Unit 2 – Engineering Production We set the tasks each year

16 Task Taking Authenticity –Tasks must be completed under informal supervision –Research: limited supervision Feedback –Monitoring progress –Preventing plagiarism –Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety

17 Task Marking Teachers mark the controlled assessment tasks using mark schemes that we provide Centres with more than one teaching group must carry out internal standardisation We will moderate centre marking

19 Task Setting There are two tasks for GCSE Engineering Unit 1: Engineering Design and Graphical Communication ( 30% of the overall award) Unit 2 Engineering Production ( 30% of the overall award) We issue the tasks in September of each year for candidates starting Year 11. Candidates must submit the completed tasks in May of Year 12.

25 Unit 1 Content Portfolio Research - 5 hours Content 3.1.1 P.7 Know that there may be more than one design solution that meets a client’s needs Know how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different design solutions Analyse the client design brief for an engineered product or engineering service to identify its key features, for example:- Function Quality standards Styling/ Aesthetics Performance Intended markets Size Maintenance Production methods and materials Cost Regulations to include health and safety Scale of production Produce a design specification from the design brief and use it to produce a final design solution through: - Researching and analysing information and data Reference P. 26 Skills to be assessed (a) + part of (b)

26 Unit 1 Content Portfolio Production of Portfolio – 20 hours To include 3.1.1Design Briefs 3.1.2 Design Specifications and Solutions 3.1.3 Engineering Drawings 3.1.4 Choosing Engineering Drawing Techniques 3.1.5 Presenting a Design Solution Assessment criteria and mark bands are on pages 26 + 27 (b)(c)(d)(e)(f) Total 38 marks Total marks for research and portfolio work is 44 marks It is important to emphasis to students that Learning outcomes presented in Unit 1 reflect the the assessment criteria and mark bands shown on pages 26 + 27. ONLY material outlined in the assessment criteria should be in the pupils portfolios. NO additional material is required

30 Unit 2 Engineering Production Through studying this unit, students develop their understanding of the process of designing and producing a product. Students learn how to: Use product specifications Read and interpret engineering drawings and diagrams Use production processes and begin to understand their importance for functional and aesthetic reasons Use quality control techniques to check that the quality of their work conforms to the standards required Use processes, tools and equipment, including computer aided manufacture( CAM) to make an engineered product Apply Health and Safety Procedures

31 Unit 2 Content There may be some links between this unit and Unit 1: Engineering Design and Graphical Communication, and with the knowledge and understanding developed in Unit 3: Engineering Technology.
