ISO 140001:2015 Environmental Management System

Lesson learning goals At the end of this section, the students should be able to explain: 1. What is an Environmental Management System ? 2. Describe the steps how to implement ISO 14001:2015 3. What benefits will it bring to your business or organization?

Environmental pollution Thailand's dramatic economic growth has caused numerous environmental issues. The country faces problems with air and water pollution, declining wildlife populations, deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity, and waste issues.airwater pollutiondeforestationsoil erosion According to a 2004 indicator, the cost of air and water pollution for the country scales up to approximately 1.6–2.6 percent of GDP per year. As such, Thailand's economic growth has come at great cost in damage to its people and environment.

The Kingdom of Thailand, one of the fast industrial growing countries in South East Asia, has faced increasingly serious environmental degradation as follows: 1) Climate Change: flooding, drought, higher temperature, and sea level rise. 2) Intensive Farming: pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer, and irrigation. 3) Water Pollution: urban runoff, ship transport, untreated sewage, septic tank, animal dung, manure spreading, acid rain, and eutrophication. 4) Air Pollution: transportation, factories, burning forest, air plane, petrol station, smog, slash and burn. 5) Resource Depletion: overfishing, deforestation, water crisis, land degradation, soil desertification, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. 6) Waste Generation: e-waste, medical waste, household waste, industrial waste, marine debris, river dumping, and landfill.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN THAILAND Environmental problems faced by Thailand include: 1) land subsidence in Bangkok area resulting from the depletion of the water table; 2) droughts and water shortages; 3) air pollution from vehicle emissions; 4) water pollution from organic and factory wastes; 5) deforestation; 6) soil erosion; and 7) wildlife populations threatened by illegal hunting. Between 1975 and 1988, the release of toxic chemicals increased 1,200 percent. DDT was still being used in the early 2000s in part because it is effective in controlling mosquitos that carry the malaria parasite. [Source: CIA World Factbook *]

Thai Oil Spill Blackens Koh Samet Beach Reporting from Koh Samet, Thailand, Andrew Stevens of CNN wrote: : A picture postcard beach on one of Thailand's most popular tourist islands is now the focus of frantic efforts to staunch a tide of oil sweeping ashore. Where pleasure seekers would normally relax on pristine white sand, sandwiched between two lush green headlands, now white-coated cleanup crew smeared with crude suck oil from the shallow waters. Gobbets of oil lie along the beach, a thin sheen covers much of the wet sand and oil-drenched booms lie like giant black snakes along the shoreline. The sea is a rust red color and the odor of fuel hangs heavy in the air. Not even a brisk onshore wind can keep the smell away. [Source: Andrew Stevens, CNN, August 1, 2013]

Management systems Management system means what the organization does to manage its processes, or activities in order that its products or services meet the organization’s objectives, such as satisfying the customer's quality requirements, complying to regulations, or meeting environmental objectives

ISO ISO 14001 Environmental mangement system Other popular standards: ISO 9001 Quality management systemsISO 9001 ISO 50001 Energy managementISO 50001 ISO 27001 Information security managementISO 27001 ISO 22000 Food safety managementISO 22000

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are among ISO's most well known standards ever. They are implemented by more than a million organizations in some 175 countries. ISO 9001 helps organizations to implement quality management. ISO 14001 helps organizations to implement environmental management.

Quality management ISO 9001 is for quality management. Quality refers to all those features of a product (or service) which are required by the customer. Quality management means what the organization does to ensure that its products or services satisfy the customer's quality requirements and comply with any regulations applicable to those products or services.

Environmental management ISO 14001 is for environmental management. This means what the organization does to: minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, to conform to applicable regulatory requirements, and to achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.

Introduction to ISO 14001:2015 ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organizations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders.

What is an environmental management system? An environmental management system helps organizations identify, manage, monitor and control their environmental issues in a “holistic” manner. Other ISO standards that look at different types of management systems, such as ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. All use a High-Level Structure. This means that ISO 14001 can be integrated easily into any existing ISO management system.

What is an environmental management system? ISO 14001 is suitable for organizations of all types and sizes, be they private, not-for-profit or governmental. It requires that an organization considers all environmental issues relevant to its operations, such as air pollution, water and sewage issues, waste management, soil contamination, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and resource use and efficiency.

What is an environmental management system? Like all ISO management system standards, ISO 14001 includes the need for continual improvement of an organization’s systems and approach to environmental concerns. The standard has recently been revised, with key improvements such as the increased prominence of environmental management within the organization’s strategic planning processes, greater input from leadership and a stronger commitment to proactive initiatives that boost environmental performance.

What benefits will it bring to my business or organization?  Users of the standard have reported that ISO 14001 helps: Demonstrate compliance with current and future statutory and regulatory requirements Increase leadership involvement and engagement of employees Improve company reputation and the confidence of stakeholders through strategic communication Achieve strategic business aims by incorporating environmental issues into business management Provide a competitive and financial advantage through improved efficiencies and reduced costs Encourage better environmental performance of suppliers by integrating them into the organization’s business systems

PDCA model Plan: establish environmental objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the organization's environmental policy. Do: implement the processes as planned. Check: monitor and measure processes against the environmental policy, including its commitments, environmental objectives and operating criteria, and report the results. Act; take actions to continually improve.

Why was ISO 14001 revised? All ISO standards are reviewed and revised regularly to make sure they remain relevant to the marketplace. ISO 14001:2015 will respond to the latest trends, including the increasing recognition by companies of the need to factor in both external and internal elements that influence their environmental impact, such as climate volatility and the competitive context in which they work. The changes also ensure that the standard is compatible with other management system standards.

Plan-Do-Check-Act model 2004 – Introduction

How do I get started with ISO 14001:2015? A number of resources, including The ISO 14001 checklist for small business, provide detailed guidance on how to use the standard, but here are a few tips to get you started: Tip 1 – Define your objectives. What do you want to achieve with this standard? Tip 2 – Get the buy-in from senior management. It is essential that the leaders of your organization support the objectives of an effective environmental management system and are committed to the process. Tip 3 – Get a good overview of existing processes and systems that are relevant to your environmental impact. This will form the basis of your environmental management system and allow you to more easily identify any gaps.

Figure 1 – ISO 14001:2015 the main changes

What are the key improvements? ISO 14001:2015 now requires: Environmental management to be more prominent within the organization’s strategic direction A greater commitment from leadership The implementation of proactive initiatives to protect the environment from harm and degradation, such as sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation A focus on life-cycle thinking to ensure consideration of environmental aspects from development to end-of- life The addition of a stakeholder-focused communication strategy

What are the main changes to the standard? The key changes relate to: Increased prominence of environmental management within the organization's strategic planning processes Greater focus on leadership Addition of proactive initiatives to protect the environment from harm and degradation, such as sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation Improving environmental performance added Lifecycle thinking when considering environmental aspects Addition of a communications strategy In addition, the revised standard follows a common structure, with the same terms and definitions as a number of other management system standards such as ISO 9001. This is particularly useful for those organizations that choose to operate a single (sometimes called “integrated”) management system that can meet the requirements of two or more management system standards simultaneously..common structureISO 9001

Should I be certified to ISO 14001 ?  ISO does not perform certification.  Accredited certification to ISO 14001 is not a requirement, and organizations can reap many of the benefits from using the standard without going through the accredited certification process.

Should I be certified to ISO 14001 ? However, third-party certification – where an independent certification body audits your practices against the requirements of the standard – is a way of signalling to your buyers, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders that you have implemented the standard properly. What’s more, for some organizations, it helps to show how they meet regulatory or contractual requirements.

Should I be certified to ISO 14001 ? Although we develop and publish standards, ISO does not perform certification. For more information about the certification process and how to find a certification body, visit the “certification” section Website (www.iso.org).
