Deliberate which behaviours during a conflict situation can produce dysfunctional responses  anger, aggression, verbal abuse, revenge, jealousy, criticizing, blame others, direct confrontation, lies, selfishness, people who can’t

3 3.When can we say conflict is destructive?  Conflict is escalating, no agreement  Parties involved forget substantive issue, get personal  Left negativity behind, carried over to next conflict  Likely to occur when behaviour is rigid and competitive

4 4. Identify some reasons for destructive conflict  Power struggle  Inability to understand point of view of others  Personal vulnerability  Lack of skills to manage conflict  Lack of empathy

5 5. How will you recognise destructive conflict  Attitude of confrontation/ dominance/ aggression  Disagreement, problem can’t be solved  People walking with grievances  Tension between people  One-way communication  Use of language e.g. person starts to talk you over/verbal abuse/

What is the consequences of destructive conflict?  Individuals use threats, verbal abuse and deception which destroy relationships  Increased tension among members, difficult for management to solve. May result in anxiety, hostility and frustration among group members  High rate of employee turn over.  Increased dissatisfaction among members that looses conflict, conflict can escalate, further acts of negativity  Decreased concentration on the job, adversely affect productivity of whole group  Distrust among members of a group and organisation. Can decrease level of cohesiveness among members  Distraction from organisational goals. Personal victory becomes more important  Waste of time and energy and cost to company/organisation

What is constructive conflict?  Balance interests of parties to maximize mutual gains; willing to find mutual acceptable outcome  Goals of both parties is satisfied, mutual agreement has been reached 8.Which behaviours can contribute to constructive feedback  Listening skills  Focusing on the big picture and not individual desires  Not interested to satisfy own personal desires

What is the consequences of constructive feedback?  Awareness of both sides issues  Improvement of working conditions due to accomplishing solutions together  Solving issues together improve overall morale of individual and group  Making innovations and improvements within organisation  Can lead to job satisfaction and increase of productivity  Increase teamwork and reaching of organizational goals as well as individual goals

9 10. What can be the symptoms of conflict in the workplace? 1. motivation drops:-fewer people volunteer to take on new tasks, little employee input at team meetings 2. Behaviour changes: -people start to make derogatory remarks towards each other; fewer social events organised 3. Productivity falls: -more complains and queries because people not cooperating with each other 4. Sickness absence increase
