3. Overview 3 Tableau is a data visualization software which allows the user to quickly create live dashboards and reports, available across multiple platforms. The capabilities of Tableau for deep analytics and visualization is unmatched in the BI industry. Connections to data sources can be created live, or imported directly into Tableau. Power BI is a cloud-based business analytics service that gives you a single view of your most critical business data.

6. Difference -- Data Connection 6 Power BI supports more cloud based and social network data sources than Tableau, such as Facebook and Twilit. It also supports XML file format and can use the properties of the files in a folder as the data source, which are not available in Tableau. Majority of the database connections that Tableau support, Power BI also support. There is one caveat, most of the ODBC connections are not listed by their individual names, so the users will need to figure out if an individual connection is supported or not SharePoint as the data sources.

8. Difference -- Data Modeling 8 Power BI and Tableau take very different approach on data modeling. Power BI Designer Preview provides data modeling and transformation in an Excel like interface, which has a built in Power Query engine that enable you to transform data in multiple steps, you need to transform or reshape the data within the query window before you can see how the data are presented in the report. Tableau does not offer a lot of data modeling upfront when connecting to a data source, instead, it allows you to visualize the data first, then decide if you need additional calculations or transformations in your worksheet. Tableau does not provide most of the ETL functionalities that Power BI provides except renaming the data fields and changing the data types when editing the data source.

10. Difference -- Application Integration 10 Both Power BI and Tableau support integration with other applications. With Power BI, you can create REST API calls to access the dashboard resources. With Tableau, you can use JavaScript API to integrate visualizations into a web application, and use REST API calls to manage the resources. With Tableau, you can also embed a view within a web application simply by copying and pasting the HTML code that Tableau provides.
