The earthworm and his senses Grade 4/ schoolyear 2010/2011 Teacher: Jutta Knittel

Jigsaw Characteristic of the „jigsaw technic“ is that through this method the pupils become experts for a certain part of topic. The group puzzle is suitable as an introduction to new topical areas and lessons. Example:The earthworm and his senses hearing, smelling, seeing.

Activity in four (4) stages Step1 1.The teacher forms core groups of 4 (3) pupils each group. 2.He/She introduces the topics and the materials 3.All group members have different tasks. 4.Every member of the group receives a section (T-shirt color). 5.All group members have different tasks.

Can an earthworm hear? Worhsheet green T-Shirt Can an earthworm hear? Does he have ears? To find out you need: - earthworm - a magnifying an class - objects to make sounds - pen and paper There we go: 1.Look at the earthworm with the magnifying class. 2. Make noises with the different objects. 3. Look at if and how the earthworm reacts and write down every change. With which objects did you make the noise and what happens?

Can an earthworm smell? Worksheet yellow T-Shirt Can an earthworm smell? Does he have a nose? To find out you need the following things: - an earthworm - watered down vinegar - saltwater - honeywater - 2 cotton sticks - pen and paper There we go: 1. Look at the front part of the earthworm with a magnifying class. Can you see a nose? 2. With the cotton stick put a drop of liquid in front of the earthworm. 3. Look what happens and write it down. 4. Dry away the liquid well. 5. With the other end of the cotton stick put a drop of next liquid in front of the worm. 6. Look again closly to what happens and write it down. 7. Wipe away the drop carefully. 8. Now take the next cotton stick and put another type of liquid in front of the worm. 9. Look again closly what happens and write it down. Does the earthworm react differently? Can he differentiate the different liquids?

Can an earthworm see? Worksheet red T-Shirt Can an erthworm see? Does he have eyes? To find out you need: - an earthworm - a magnifying class - a torch - cardboard - pen and paper There we go: 1. Lock at the frontpart of the earthworm with a magnifying class. Can you see eyes? 2. With the torch have a look if the earthworm can make out the different between light or dark. 3.Fold the cardboard so that it would look like a roof of a house. Cover the end part of the earthworm with it. Shine the light on the worm but make sure it doesn`t go under the cardboard. 4. After that cover the front part of the earthworm and let the light shine at the end. Again make sure the light isn`t getting under the cardboard. 5. Write down your study results. What differences can you see between the two tests? Can your earthworm tell the difference between light and dark?

Step 2 (selfstudy) Every pupil works on his/ her part of the topic alone. Here: carries out an experiment, writes down the experiment and the results.

Some examples of the pupils notes Experiments

Step 3 expert groups The pupils come together in homogeneous groups, which means that all the pupils who carried out the same experiment make up one „expert group“. They present their experiment results and discuss these together and ask each other questions.

Step 4 Back in the core groups The pupils meet again in their core groups. In each group all experiments are represented by an expert. Each one now reports his own experiment as „the teacher“. » Remember » face to face » knees to knees Everyone knows that he is responsible for his own section. He/She must explain well, so that each member of the group would pass an exam. In each core group the same parallel lesson takes place.

Next lesson: Evaluation The newly gained and the general knowledge about the earthworm must be tested with sentences

The main principle is: Better learning by self-teaching! I like the jigsaw, because I made the observation: Success in learning is higher. The confidence of the pupils will rise. Less conflicts Two-way pupil appreciation

CL- organisation At every table there are 4 pupils. Numbered heads: nr. 1 green, nr. 2 yellow, nr. 3 red and nr. 4 blue Afterwards all number ones gather at a table marked with „number 1“, same for number twos and so on. They form the expert group for one sense.

Your CL coach is very proud Well done, Mrs. Knittel! Great job!
