CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules  KISD Supervision Requirements and Interfaces  KISD employee (or an off-hours-authorized mentor) must be present in building when students are working  Two mentors required on site when students are working, one may be the KISD employee  Building (and our bay) secured by KISD employee or authorized mentor after work session  Each adult mentor or visitor will have to pass a Raptor screening once each year – complete this screening as soon as possible with the KISD representative at the entrance lobby  If an injury or significant KISD equipment damage occurs, ensure it gets reported on the form in the front office  Ensure the KISD employee gets safely to their car at the end of an evening build session  Follow the rules for the RSC and our team safety rules covered in the rest of this presentation

CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules  Our job is to help and teach the students while working safely  No one-on-one student/adult work – always 2 adults present  No unsupervised student work – monitor all work areas periodically  Provide positive feedback and compliment good student work  No disparaging remarks about the students  Help lead students to workable solutions  Don’t take over and squash student ideas or disparage them  Don’t show favoritism among the students  Help the students reach their goals safely  Stop any unsafe work – help students do tasks more safely  Ensure all students are picked up before the last mentor leaves  Respect and support your fellow mentors and KISD staff – our team and others  We interface and share some resources with our neighbors at the RSC:  Be courteous to our neighbors – respect their mentors and students  Help the other teams and their students where we can  Don’t hog the common shop machines or field

CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)  Safety glasses  Required in work bays, central shop, and within 5 feet of field when in use  Must meet OSHA Z-87  Side shields required (or compliant wrap-around glasses or goggles)  Normal glasses with side shields do NOT satisfy this requirement  Glasses must be clear or only lightly tinted – we must easily see your eyes  Shoe requirements  Closed-toed shoes required in work bay and central shop any time work or practice is in progress and within 5 feet of central, carpeted field when in use  Prohibited: flip-flops, sandals, flats, “Crocs”, “Five-Toes”, other “non- substantial” footware  Steel- or safety-toed shoes are strongly recommended  Sole of shoe must resist puncture

CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)  Other personal protective equipment (PPE)  Specific PPE required in areas is defined by KISD and building administration, as well as by our CRyptonite rules  Our team has specific PPE for each tool posted on the tool  Wear appropriate gloves when handling sharp materials (leather or cloth) or handling chemicals (rubber or plastic) – we have more hand injuries than anything else  Use ear protection as needed – see the tool requirements  Loose clothing, jewelry, hair, hoodie strings, etc.  Shall be kept out of the way when working with power tools  Do not wear rings when working with materials  Do not wear long-sleeves or gloves when working with potentially entangling tools (e.g. mill, lathe, and drill press)  Tie back long hair; remove jewelry; roll up long sleeves; take off hoodies (watch hoodie strings)  Remind the students if you see loose clothing

 Training requirements  Proper training in safe use is required to operate a power tool or the plasma cutter  Includes everyone working at the RSC (mentors and students)  Each team has people trained to teach others on their team the required procedures  We maintain records to demonstrate this requirement has been met  Team safety programs  Within our bay, we have more strict safety requirements than the RSC  Use proper tools, in good condition, for each job  Contact another mentor immediately if any problems arise or if you don’t know how to do something  No open flames are allowed in the building – e.g. propane torch CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)

 Daily housekeeping requirements  Keep areas clean and uncluttered  Keep emergency exits clear  Keep carpeted area clear of debris and cuttings, no drilling or cutting on field carpet  Clean up begins 15 minutes before the end of a session  Clean area before you leave  Trash and recyclables are to be cleaned up and disposed of in the proper locations  Floor shall be swept and vacuumed as needed  Tools, surplus raw materials, and other items shall be put away when finished with them  Clean up the area outside if it has been used for painting or other activities  All power should be turned off at the end of the day – except for battery charging stations CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)

 Chemicals and paint usage  No use of volatile or vapor emitting chemicals in the building  No spray painting in the building – OK out back with adult supervision  Proper PPE required when handling chemicals – e.g. students should wear gloves for “Mother’s Mag and Aluminum Polish” which contains caustic  Materials must be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions  We have MSDSs (or SDSs) available in the site copy of the Team Safety Manual for the chemicals we use  In the event of a spill, notify KISD representative  Behavior  No horseplay or rowdy behavior on the premises – watch the students  Food and drinks  No food or drinks (except water) in the bays  Food is allowed around the central bay (not on the carpet) and outside the building (patios)  Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food or drink CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)

 Incident reporting requirements  Report any incident resulting in injury, fire, or damage to people, building, or equipment immediately  KISD representative must be notified and simple report form completed at front office  Includes minor first aid, like a band aid  Report near-misses which could have resulted in injury to our safety team (see decision tree on next page)  To report an injury or near-miss to our team, use the form on the green clipboard attached to the side of the sign-in table  To report an injury to the RSC, go to the RSC administrator’s office  Do not leave valuable equipment exposed to possible theft  Remove or put away laptops each night out of sight  Put away drills and other equipment when not in use  Cover over robots and large machine tools after each session CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)

 Outside visitors are allowed in the RSC with clearance by KISD representative  Same PPE and shoe restrictions apply  Visitor stickers required – generated by Raptor system if an adult  Visitors may not operate equipment and should be escorted  Let the Lead Mentor or responsible mentors in our Bay know before bringing a visitor to the RSC  Visitors from other teams are allowed in our bay  If a team member from one team visits another team’s bay, they are expected to comply with the safety rules of the team they are visiting  In our Bay:  Safety glasses, closed-toed shoes, and sign-in required  If visitors do not have closed-toed shoes, work must stop in the immediate area while the visitors are present  Visitors may not operate equipment  Visitors to our Bay should be escorted CRyptonite and RSC Safety Rules (Cont’d)
