Цели урока: познакомить учащихся с жизнью и творчеством великого английского поэта и драматурга Вильяма Шекспира; приобщать учащихся к общечеловеческим ценностям; воспитывать уважение к культуре страны изучаемого языка.

William Shakespeare was one of the greatest and famous writers of the world. Many people know and like his works but many facts of Shakespeare’s life are still unknown.

William Shakespeare was born in 1564, April, 23 in Stratford- on-Avon, a small English town. His father was a rich citizen whose business was making and selling leather gloves. His mother was the daughter of an important farmer. House where William was born

Shakespeare studied at local grammar school because his father wanted his son to be an educated person. While studying at school, William didn’t have much free time but he liked to go to the forest and river Avon. At the age of 19, William married Anne Hathaway.

She was a farmer’s daughter and she was some years older than himself. During that years he may have helped his father in the family business or he may have been a country schoolmaster for a time, we don’t know exactly. The church where William and Anne got married

Young William liked to watch actors and actresses who visited Stratford-on-Avon. He was fond of actor’s profession and decided to become an actor. With this purpose William left Stratford-on-Avon for London.

There were several playhouses in London and one of them, called the Theatre. It was at the Theatre that some years later Shakespeare began his acting career and started to write plays. It’s highly probable that Romeo and Juliet was first performed on this stage.

The parents didn’t even guess that their son would be such an important figure in England poetry and drama and that his plays would still be acted four hundred years later in England and all over the world.

By 1603 Shakespeare was the leading poet and dramatist of his time. He lived and worked in London for 25 years. By the end of the 16th century William Shakespeare and his friends had enough money to build their own theatre – the Globe.

In 1599 the famous Globe Theatre was built on the south bank of the river Thames. In that theatre most of Shakespeare’s plays were performed. It was a round building with the stage in the center, open to sky. If it was raining, the actors got wet; if the weather was too bad, there was no performance at all.

Women in those days weren’t allowed to act in public and all parts (even Juliet!) were played by men. Much of the audience stood to watch the performance and moved around, talking to each other and throwing fruit at the stage if they didn’t like something.

In all Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 2 long poems, a sonnet cycle of 155 small pieces.

William Shakespeare had a natural gift for comedy. In his comedies “Two Gentlemen of Verona”, “As you Like It”, “The Twelfth Night” he describes the adventures of young men and women, their love, friendship, happiness.

Shakespeare’s tragedies “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Romeo and Juliet” depict noblemen who opposed evil in the world. Since they were written there has never been a time when at least some of Shakespeare’s plays were not staged.

In the summer of 1613, during the performance of Shakespeare’s King Henry VIII the Globe caught fire and was burnt to the ground. The theatre was rebuilt in 1614.

B ut a new blow fell upon it in 1616: William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright the world had ever known, died of a fever, ironically on the same date as his birthday, April, 23. The theatre was closed in 1642 by the Puritans and pulled down in 1644.

In 1949, an American actor Sam Wanamaker came to London and decided to visit the site of the famous Globe Theatre where Shakespeare had staged his plays. All he found, however, was a plaque on the wall of a brewery: “Here stood the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare”.

Wanamaker was so shocked that he decided to rebuild the Globe. It took many years to raise the money, get permission and find out exactly what the place looked like in the old days. In June 1997, Her Majesty the Queen opened the International Shakespeare Globe Centre, the re-creation of Shakespeare’s theatre.

Unfortunately, Sam Wanamaker died in 1993 and wasn’t in audience to see his dream finally come true. Today, you can visit the beautiful new Globe, and in summer you can even see a play performed as it would have been performed in Shakespeare’s days.
