3. Who was Shakespeare On April 23, 1564 a son, William, was born to John and Mary Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon. John was rich enough to send the boy to the Grammar School of the town to get quite a good education. There William learned to love reading. While still a teenager, he married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter some years older than himself. When William was 22, he left Stratford and went to London where he joined the company of actors. At first he improved old plays, and then he began to write his own plays. William also acted in his own and other plays. Most of his plays were performed in the new Globe Theatre built on the River Thames.
