1 FIRST GRADE Welcome to Back to School Night! Hi Parents! Please: 1.Sit at your child’s seat. 2.Write your “hopes and dreams” for your child’s first grade year on the sun template provided. 3. Review the BTSN Agenda and feel free to leave a brief note in your child’s red work folder.

City)  4 parts  Greeting, Share, Activity, Morning Message Hopes and Dreams C.A.R.E.S. 3 First Grade Curriculum Reading Daily 5 to include: Guided Reading Read to Self Read to Someone Work on Writing Word Work Students are instructed at their instructional DRA text level (based on the Developmental Reading Assessment). Writing Lucy Calkins Small Moments, Reviews, Informational, Fiction Letter Writing, and Poetry Word Study Developmental Spelling program Letter Name and Within Word Stage Math  Calendar Math  Math Expressions  Investigations  Math Talk Standards: Number Sense Computation and Estimation Measurement Geometry Probability and Statistics Patterns, Functions and Algebra Social Studies RC/Civics, Past Present Future, Holidays, Symbols, Virginia History, Famous Americans, Economics, Geography, and Around the World Science Classify, Measure, Predict, Interactions with H2O, Moving objects, Plants/Animals, Resources, Day/Night, Seasons

4 Differentiation Small, flexible groups to reinforce, practice, and extend concepts Formal/informal assessments given often to determine instructional levels and needed strategies Academic Choice Individual goal setting conferences (student & teacher) Lightning Round (focused groups across grade level)

7 Homework Homework goes home on Mondays Completed homework returns to school on Friday Keep Math Expressions homework workbook in a safe place throughout the year. Homework Menu  Reading, Writing, and Math 20 minutes of reading per night

9 Getting Involved Fall & Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences –  October 6th and 7 th (Fall) Friday Fresh  Pre-cut, individual servings if possible. (25 students) Chaperone a Field Trip  Discovery Theater – December  Botanical Gardens – May  National Museum of the American Indian – February Classroom Fund $30.00 for field trips and classroom celebrations.  3 field trips  Class Events: Halloween, Service Project, Global Holiday Celebration, Valentine’s Day, and End of Year Around the World Pot Luck. Volunteer Spot – A Parent/Teacher communication website will be used for classroom sign-ups.
