1. Course Syllabus Grade Seven Ancient History Welcome to King Philip Middle School! This year long course is the study of ancient world history Topics include: Unit 1 Early Humans and the Rise of Civilization Unit 2 Ancient Egypt and the Near East ~the geography of Egypt, Kush and Canaan ~ancient Egyptian pharaohs ~daily life in ancient Egypt ~kingdom of Kush ~ancient Hebrews and the origins of Judaism Unit 3 Ancient Greece how do social scientists examine artifacts to investigate the past early hominids and their capabilities from hunters and gatherers to farmers from farming villages to Sumerian city-states the characteristics of a civilization the achievements of four empires of Mesopotamia Early Greek settlements Minoans and Mycenaeans the geography of Greece rise of democracy Athens vs. Sparta the Persian Wars the Golden Age of Athens Alexander the Great the Legacy of Greece Unit 4 Ancient Rome geography of Rome rise of the Roman Republic from Republic to Empire daily life in Roman Empire origins and spread of Christianity legacy of Rome in the modern world

The primary text used in this course is “History Alive” The textbook is supplemented with materials such as graphic organizers with power point presentations, plays, “choose your own fate” stories and primary and secondary sources This approach to teaching history consists of a series of instructional practices that allow students of all abilities to experience key ancient history concepts. “History Alive” uses three educational theories: ~ students have multiple intelligences ~ cooperative interaction increases learning gains ~ all students can learn Strategies used that allow students with diverse learning styles to “experience” ancient history include: ~ visual discovery – students view, touch, analyze, or act out images projected on slides ~ skill builders – students sit in groups to complete skill-oriented tasks such as mapping geographic features ~ response groups to discuss and problem solve ~ writing for understanding ~ reading for understanding in four stages – preview, read, takes notes and process ~ sound assessment tools that prepare students for standardized tests and help them meaningfully applied what they have learned ~ use of an interactive student notebook to enable the student to improve and refine note-taking skills Supplies needed for this course are a three ring binder, colored pencils, glue stick, pen/pencil, and a highlighter A flash drive is optional but not necessary Grading ~ tests, projects, and formal writing assignments have a point value of 100 and count twice ~ notebook organization, homework, quizzes and warm ups have a point total of 100 and count once Class assignments are posted daily and can be accessed from the King Philip Middle School home page.
