What is IP Address Management ?  Management of allocation, administration, reporting and tracking of public and private IP space, IP devices and associated data  Consists of processes and systems that interface with DNS and DHCP infrastructure  Required for flawless operation of network  Enterprises primarily use manual processes e.g. paper records or spreadsheets for tracking IP addresses Operations: Provision & Operate Insight: Analyze & Track Architecture: Plan & Allocate

DNS Changes Case Study Problem: Add a host on request from the application server team Infoblox Benefits –Resolves request quickly without the need to involve senior network staff –Reduced errors by automating manual steps, less downtime The traditional way – 20 Minutes  Helpdesk receives a request to add a host  Helpdesk forwards the request to the network or server team  DNS administrator edits zone file and adds an “A” record, updates SOA serial # and saves file  Adds “PTR” record, Edits reverse zone, updates SOA serial and saves file  Restarts “named”  Tests and checks the logs for errors  If errors present go back and troubleshoot The Infoblox Way – 1 Minute  Application server team uses their own delegated UI to add a record in one step Net savings of $25 per DNS change made

5 © 2009 Infoblox Inc. All Rights Reserved. IP address Reclaim Case Study Problem: A new laptop cannot get an IP address due to IP space exhaustion Infoblox Benefits –Avoids outages by proactively reclaiming IPs and cleaning up IP space –Increases user productivity The traditional way – 60 Minutes  Helpdesk receives a ticket saying “cannot connect to network”  Helpdesk forwards the request to network team  Network administrator examines the device to determine the problem and concludes it is unable to get an IP address  Administrator looks at DHCP logs to see IP address usage, the space looks full  Administrator does a manual “ping sweep” of IP address range to find available IPs.  Administrator assigns one of the IPs that “seem” available  Assigned IP may already be in use by some other device and conflicts may arise once the other device comes up  Follow these steps again to troubleshoot The Infoblox Way – 0 Minutes  IP address lease history, network discovery and automated alerts allow administrators to proactively free up IP addresses Net savings of $80 per incident (not including lost work time and assuming no errors)

6 © 2009 Infoblox Inc. All Rights Reserved. Network Provisioning Case Study Problem: Create a new network under a tight deadline for a key project Infoblox Benefits: –Saves up to 90% administrative effort –Reduces errors by eliminating conflicts and reducing manual steps –Enables rapid response The traditional way: 1 Hour  Lookup spreadsheet for an available network  Manually create subnets, ensure there is no overlap (may result in errors)  Update spreadsheet  Create DHCP range  Create static IPs for routers, printers  Create DNS Hostnames for static IPs  Update spreadsheet  Contact server administrators for updating DNS and DHCP records including reverse zones  Verify all changes are correct The Infoblox Way – 3 Minutes  Use network map to find an available network  Use wizards, select template to create a new network –Automatically creates, ranges, static IPs and updates DNS and DHCP Net savings of $75 per network

7 © 2009 Infoblox Inc. All Rights Reserved. IP Address Provisioning Example Problem: Assign static IP address to a device (printer, camera, etc,) Infoblox Benefits –Helpdesk resolves request, without errors and without involving network team –Faster response, fewer duplicate IPs, less downtime, reduced load on network team The traditional way – 30 Minutes  Helpdesk receives a request for a new IP address  Helpdesk forwards the request to network team  Network administrator looks up spreadsheet for an available static IP address  Uses PING or other methods to see if IP address is in use  Update spreadsheet  Contact server administrators for updating DNS & DHCP records including reverse zones  Verify functionality  Get back to helpdesk upon completion The Infoblox Way – 2 Minutes  Helpdesk receives a request for a new IP address  Helpdesk uses simple Web-based GUI to get next available IP address and assign it to the device Net savings of approx $40 per IP assignment – and response in minutes vs. days
