6 Bigger Numbers What about bigger numbers that are not in a multiplication grid? There are various methods you can use. Find one you like and stick to it! Here are some of the more common ones: ©www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

7 Work out £192 ÷ 6 Set up the method: 6 192 60 132 60 10 72 60 10 12 Multiply 6 by eg 10, then subtract 10 Repeated Subtraction 2 32 12 0 Repeat this method until your green number is 0 or a number less than 6. Total the last column = 32 There is no “wrong” number to multiply by – but it will be quicker if you choose wisely! ©www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

8 Work out £128 ÷ 8 Set up the method: 8 128 80 48 Multiply 8 by something easy such as 10, then subtract 10 Repeated Subtraction 16 6 0 Repeat this method until your green number is 0 or a number less than 8. = 16 ©www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

9 If you know your tables, you can split the number up into useful parts: Work out 654  6 Remember6  6 = 1 60  6 = 10 600  6 = 100 Use this split 600 Partitioning 6 is in the 6 times table and so is 54. 54 654  6 = 109  6 = 100  6 = 9 ©www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

11 Find the answer to £84 ÷ 4 Set up the division: Think of this as 8 tens to share between 4 people. How many do they get each? 2 Traditional Short Division 4 “ones” to be shared between 4 people. How many do they each get? 1 = 21 ©www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015
