2 John Holland’s Basic Information Spent most of his career at Johns Hopkins University Creator of RIASEC career development model (Holland’s hexagon) Created the self-directed search

3 Holland Hexagon Holland believed that people could be placed into six different types The six types are also known as Holland codes

4 Activity #1 Make a list of six different types of people (I.E.-Creative) Place your six types around a hexagon in an order that you believe shows connectivity creative social Example:

5 Holland Codes The Holland Codes are often nicknamed RIASEC (for the first letter of each type name) The Types are: –RealisticSocial –InvestigativeEnterprising –ArtisticConventional

6 Realistic People who are this type: Strong mechanical, psychomotor, and athletic abilities; Honest; Loyal; Like the outdoors; Prefer working with machines, tools, plants, and animals. Work environments: Structured; Clear goals and lines of authority; Work with hands, machines, or tools; Casual dress; Focus on tangible results; Engineering, military, skilled trades

7 Investigative People: Strong problem solving and analytical skills; Mathematically inclined; Like to observe, learn, and evaluate; Prefer working alone; Reserved; Idea generators Work Environments: Nonstructured; research oriented; intellectual; discover, collect, and analyze ideas/data; science, math, medicine, and computer related; labs, universities, high tech, hospitals.

8 Artistic People: Creative; Complex; Emotional; Intuitive; Idealistic; Flair for communicating ideas; Prefer working independently; Like to sing; Write, act, paint, think creatively Work Environment: Nonstructured; creative; flexible; rewards unconventional and aesthetic values; creation of products and ideas; arts organizations, films/TV, publishing, advertising, museums, theater, galleries

9 Social People: Friendly; Outgoing; Find fulfillment in helping others; Strong verbal and personal skills; Teaching abilities; Impulsive Work Environment: Harmonious; congenial; work on people-related problems/issues; inform train, develop, cure, or enlighten others; team oriented; human resources; training, education, social service, hospitality, health care, nonprofit

10 Enterprising People: Confident; assertive; sociable; speaking and leadership abilities; like to use influence; strong interpersonal skills; status conscious Work Environment: True business environment; results oriented; driven; high- quality service and product orientation; entrepreneurial; high prestige; power focused; sales, management, politics, finance, retail, leadership

14 Holland’s Hexagon Some people share more than one type Most people will share types with neighboring categories on the hexagon

15 Holland’s Self-Directed Search Holland believed that if someone enters a career that is not related to their type, then they will not be satisfied and/or successful in that career Taking Holland’s Self-Directed Search will help potential job-seekers determine what types they are Dr. Robert C. Reardon developed the SDS report (which is a document that helps describe the results of the SDS)

16 Self-directed Search Information SDS searches are usually made up of different sections and take about 20 minutes to complete On the SDS report you will find: –Your 3 letter Holland code –How you can use your code to your advantage –A list of occupations that would be suitable for your Holland code –Steps that you should take in your career path
