Cooking your meals. Trangia stoves.

Cooking your meals Outdoor cooking differs substantially from kitchen- based cooking. The most obvious difference being lack of an easily defined kitchen area. As a result, campers and backpackers have developed a significant body of techniques and specialized equipment for preparing food in outdoors environments.

Portable stove. A portable stove is a cooking stove specially designed to be portable and lightweight. Used in camping, picnicking, backpacking, or other use in remote locations where an easily transportable means of cooking or heating is needed. Stoves differ widely in their size and portability. The smallest models are generally termed backpacking stoves.

Many stove options are available for the outdoors.

Trangia Cooking Stove. This storm-proof stove system is based on simplicity. Two windshields that fit together, a burner, a couple of pans, a combined lid/frypan. The stoves are lightweight. They need no special care and they are hardwearing. The Trangia stove is reliable, without unnecessary parts that can go wrong or be adversely affected by cold. The stove is quick to set up. Packs into a compact unit that takes up minimal space.

Trangia Cooking Stove. The heart of the storm-proof stove system is the two-part windshield. The ventilation holes in the lower windshield are turned to face into the wind to increase the oxygen supply to the burner. If the wind becomes too strong, the stove is turned to maintain the required flame. The combined frypan/lid can be put on top of the pan to speed up heating and save fuel.

Safety when using the Trangia. Whilst on your DofE expedition, your Trangia stove and is the most riskiest piece of kit in your rucksack. Everyone knows that when they are used properly they are relatively safe. However there have been incidents with DofE participants, where little knowledge of the Trangia and it’s safety have caused problems. DofE expeditions gas Trangias will be used because of the easier fuel storage packed in safety canisters.

Safety when using the Trangia. Do not use Trangias inside tents or confined spaces. The carbon monoxide fumes produced by Trangias are harmful and tents are highly flammable. Before lighting the stove make sure that the Trangia is at least 10 metres away from the tent. Make sure that hot pans are not put down on grass where it will be scorched.

Tips for all Trangia beginners. Do not leave the handle on the Trangia when a pan is on the flame. It will get very hot and could burn you. Never leave a Trangia unattended whilst you are cooking. Always place the Trangia on the ground. It is recommended that you form a ‘Trangia circle’ or semi circle as there is a huge likelihood of you knocking over a Trangia or tripping over a gas tube. Clean the Trangia on the evening of the meal, it really is extra hassle to clean it in the morning especially if there’s bits of spaghetti stuck the pan, so I would also recommend taking a scourer with you on the expedition.
