4 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Success stories Success stories are based on different levels by establishing effective management systems, organizing employment in and outside the sites, funding, ecotourism, settlements for the local communities outside sensitive areas, special conservation programmes, capacity building convincing politicians, stakeholders, donnors, getting international assistance, guidance, access to networks.

5 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Information sharing on management approaches A management plan for a World Heritage site is an integrated planning and action concept that lays down legal instruments, goals and measures for the protection, conservation, use and development of WH sites. Essential modules of a management plan (§ 49 OP) are: legislative, regulatory and contractual measures for protection, boundaries for effective protection, buffer zones, management systems, sustainable use.

6 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Information sharing on management approaches An effective management system involves a cycle of long-term and day-to-day actions to protect, conserve and present the property. The system will depend on the type, characteristics and needs of the property and its cultural and legal context. A system could include traditional practices and knowledge, existing urban or regional planning instruments and other planning and control mechanisms, both formal and informal.

7 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Information sharing on management approaches Essential elements of a management system are –a shared understanding of the property by all stakeholders, – a cycle of planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and feedback, – involvement of partners and stakeholders, – capacity building; – an accountable transparent description of how the system works

8 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Guidance to assist State Parties to mitigate threats Special WHC-webpage on management with - link to publications (WHC, AB´s and others) - presentation „best-practise-example of the month“, - link to funding programmes, - link to conferences, expert meetings etc.

9 Theme 2: Management „issues“ Policy appoaches to common threats to properties Common threats needs common approaches, that means i.e. - trends of conservation had to be countinously evaluated and assessed by the AB´s, - international surveys of international crimes as organized poaching and illegal logging, - a fund (as compension, filled by the global mining industrie resp.by x % of each license-amount) for the integrity and conservation of areas with OUV
