3. Rise of the Moguls  Moguls were Turks led by Babur  Conquered northern India in 1504  By 1605 ruled most of India

4. Structure of Government  Ruled by an emperor  Had a large bureaucracy divided into 2  Upper ranks = nonnative Muslims  Lower ranking = native Hindus

5. Role of Religion  The Moguls were Sunni Muslim  Under Akbar & others, Hindus were treated kindly & tolerance was practiced  Later Mogul rulers enforced strict laws & taxes on Hindus  New religious group, Sikhs, were persecuted by Moguls

6. The Ming Dynasty  The Ming overthrew the Mongols in 1368

7. Structure of Government  Emperors ruled the Ming Dynasty  The Forbidden Palace was center of Ming Government  Confucian civil servants (largest bureaucracy in the ancient world) helped govern the empire.

8. Role of Religion  The official “religion” of China was the philosophy, Confucianism  Many Chinese peasants and merchants were Buddhist, however  Chinese emperors were tolerant of other religions  Confucianism, however, was a part of everyone’s life & the only “path” to government
