3 Let’s look at this clock: This is called an analog clock. Look at the lines along the outside edge of the clock. These lines represent minutes. Each time the minute hand moves to the next line, one minute has passed. Now let’s look at the numbers around the outside edge of the clock. There are 5 minutes between each number – If the minute hand is on the 2, how many minutes is that? – If the minute hand is on the 5, how many minutes is that? Did you see how we got the answers?

4 Therefore… We start by reading the hour hand (in red) which is 4. Then we read the minute hand (in blue) by counting the lines…1…2…3 So it is 4:03 We could also say three minutes after four.

5 On the hour We say it’s 1 o’clock We write it 1 : 00 or one o’clock We see it on a digital clock as 1 : 00 We see it on an analog clock as Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

6 It’s quarter after We say it’s 1 fifteen or quarter after 1 We write it 1 : 15 or one fifteen We see it on a digital clock as 1 : 15 We see it on an analog clock as Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

7 Can you believe it’s half past We say it’s 1 thirty or half past 1 We write it 1 : 30 or one thirty We see it on a digital clock as 1 : 30 We see it on an analog clock as Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

8 It’s quarter till We say it’s 1 forty-five or quarter till 2 We write it 1 : 45 or one forty-five We see it on a digital clock as 1 : 45 We see it on an analog clock as Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

9 Increments of 5 minutes We learned before that when the minute hand is pointing to the 2, that does not mean 2 minutes, but 10. Who can tell me how we know that?

10 Your turn to practice on the hour 2 o’clock 3:00 Four o’clock 5:00 Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

11 Your turn to practice quarter after 2 fifteen 3:15 quarter after 4 5:15 Use red for the hour hand Use blue for the minute hand

17 Time for Group Work If you have a Red checkmark: go to the back of the classroom If you have a Blue checkmark: go to the front of the classroom If you have a Green checkmark: go to the carpet area of the classroom

18 The rules of the game 1.Take your whiteboard clock and your marker 2.Partner up in your groups 3.Take a bag of flashcards 4.Together with your partner take turns drawing flash cards (some will have a digital time and you will draw the hands on your clocks, and others will have an analog time and you will write the time digitally) 5.Each person should do each flashcard 6.Check each other’s work! 7.When you are finished have a seat in your assigned seat. 8.Wait for the next set of directions!
