2 HOMEWORK- WTR OUTLINE 1.Theme: (Element of media or globalization) 2.Events: (List the major things that will happen in your story) 3.Setting: (In what locations will your story take place) 4.Characters: (Who will be in your story aside from yourself?) 5.Mood: (What is the dominant impression you will covey in different parts of the story?) 6.Reflection: (how did you feel about this experience? What did you learn?)

4 DESCRIPTIVE WRITING VOCABULARY Dominant Impression An overall feeling the details work together to create Concrete words Provide very specific details about their subject and often appeal to several of the senses Active verbs Show someone or something performing an action. Are often preferable in writing to linking verbs or passivized constructions Descriptive verbs Verbs that create a vivid depiction or help convey a dominant impression instead of just providing information

5 GROUP ACTIVITY: DESCRIPTIVE WRITING TECHNIQUES PT1 As a class, view the restaurant images on page 155 Discuss possible dominant impressions you might use for the description of a restaurant Select one dominant impression for each group 1.In your unit 1 groups, provide a detailed description of that restaurant using concrete words and active/descriptive verbs that conveys your selected dominant impression.

6 GROUP ACTIVITY: DESCRIPTIVE WRITING TECHNIQUES PT2 In your unit 1 groups Do exercise 6.5 on page 159 Write out each sentence, cross out the weak or linking verbs, and replace them with active or descriptive verbs

7 GROUP ACTIVITY: DESCRIPTIVE WRITING TECHNIQUES PT3 In your unit 1 groups Do exercise 6.6 on page 160 For each sentence, write down the descriptive verb you will use to replace “walk” or “said”
