Patterns, Functions and Algebra

Definition  Identifying different attributes, capacities and densities.  Help children to familiarize with different math functions and to better classify different sequences, such as colors, objects, sounds, stories, or movements that repeat in the order.

Activity 1  Learning Goal: Most children will be able to make sense of mathematics an comprehend what patterns are.  Materials: Poster board, markers, printout of ice cream: strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. Bring ice cream, spoons, mini cups and Ice cream scoop. Procedures  First, Teacher will introduce pattern sorting.  Next, Teacher will give all the children the opportunity to choose the ice cream flavor of their choice.  Last, the children will have the opportunity to go up to the ice cream flavor chart and fill in their choice, creating a pattern. Strawberry Chocolate Vanilla

Modifications & Pictures  Modifications: Provided children with different color of constructions paper shaped like a scope of ice cream, glue and ice cream cone cut out. Ask children to create a pattern.

Activity 2  Learning Objective: The children will familiarize themselves with the different types of textures and patterns each material is made of.  Materials: Plates, different types of materials with different types of textures. Procedures  Teacher will gather all children for circle time. Teacher will then proceed to introduce the word texture and what does it mean and the different type of textures each individual material is made off. Then Teacher will set up on each table and label each section along with the texture that belongs to each category this way all the children will have the opportunity to have a visual representation to better understand what belongs to each category. Teacher, will engage all children by having a big box filled with many different types of materials with different textures. Each individual child will have the opportunity to explore all the materials and discuss in what category they think the object belongs depending on the texture they see and feel.

Modifications & Pictures  Modifications: For child who is blind teacher will have many different types of textures at a close proximity for the child to be able to touch and use. The Teacher will have a full made texture book made by herself for the child along with a radio recording according to the picture that coincides with activity for the child to be able to use and be able to understand the activity in depth.

Activity 3  Picture Cards (What does it do?)  LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Children will learn to identify objects and its functions.  Materials: Picture Cards. Optional: speaker with audio sounds Procedures:  First Teacher will show children one picture card at a time.  Then the teacher will ask questions to the children such what does this do?, what do you call this?, What type of sounds does it make?

Modifications & Pictures

Activity 4  Learning Objective: Children will be able to identified which item weights more or less. As well comprehend what densities is and how it can affect and object to weight more than the other.  Materials: A scale, different objects that vary in weight, size & color. Procedures  First, children will choose two objects and guess which one weights more/less.  Next, the children will place one on each side of the scale. They will be able to see what objects weights more as the scale moves.  Last, The teacher will be able to ask open ended questions such as why does this one weight more?, Was your first guess, correct?, Why did you thought it weight more than the other object?

Modification & Pictures  Modifications: Provide children with different small objects and have them classified them in a category. Lights to Heaviest.

Follow up activities  Patterned Snake: The Children are introduced to AB patterns, and will be able to practice with different colored blocks to make a pattern snake. The children will be able to use their eye- and hand coordination, fine motor skills, and creativity as they completed the Activity.  Materials: Different colored construction paper strips, tape, googly eyes, yarn, Small piece of red felt for tongue and Glue. Procedures  Step#1 : tape the strips together to make small tubes.  Step #2 tape the yarn to the inside of a tube  Step #3 Before the kids started stringing their snakes, I had them make a pattern with the tubes so that it would be easier to have the pattern set up and transfer that pattern to the yarn.  Step#4 Lastly, they will glue on eyes and a red felt tongue to complete their paper pattern snakes.

Follow up Activity 2  Fruit Pattern: children will be able to choose different varieties of fruit and make patterns with the fruit that they choose. Creating their own pattern  Materials: Different type of fruits cut into different shapes, wax paper Procedures  Step one: Have fruit ready in separate bowls.  Step two: have children choose the fruit that they like to use.  Step three: Use a piece of wax paper so that the children can form their fruit pattern.  Step four talk about the pattern they made and let them eat it after!!!
