1 A Web Coordinator guide to creating links

2 Other tabs and buttons in the ‘create link’ menu: ‘Querysting’ – these are useful for creating ‘pagejumps’ to certain sections of the page. If you think these would be beneficial for your page, send a ‘Web request’ to communications.communications ‘Open in new window’ – When selected, it keeps the webpage open in its original window. The link opens a page in a new window. This only needs to be used when creating a an external link to a different website. Search engine “no follow”- this will tell serch enginesprevent the search engines following these links, and attempting to index the associated pages.

3 Link types Creating links means you’re able to guide your audience. You can send them to different pages, documents and useful information or to other websites entirely. You can also create specialist links to help people email or phone your team. The different link types of link are: Internal link – links to other pages on this website External link – links to other websites Asset link – links to documents or files Email – to help open up their email folder and create a new message Telephone – useful for those who are browsing their website using their phones. Selecting this link while on your phone will give you the option to make a call.

4 Creating links 1.Highlight the text you’d like to create a link over (links should be relevant to the subject) 2.Move to the ‘Formatting’ view. 3.Select ‘ Link ’ and Choose your link type Internal link – hit ‘update’ and browse the sitemap to locate the page in question External link copy the link you’d like and paste it in, or type it. The website already states ‘http’, so you’ll need to delete that from your pasted link. You could also change this to https if needed. Asset link – links to documents or files. Browse the asset library, or add your own. Steps for adding are highlighted on the page. Email – add the email address Telephone – add the telephone number without any spaces.

5 Internal link Internal link is the first link type that appears in the dropdown menu when you select ‘Link’ Choose the ‘select’ button

6 Internal link You’ll then see the sitemap. This is where you can find the page you’d like to link to, and select it.

7 Internal link By selecting the page you’d like to link to, the url and Alternate Text fields are filled in for you. You can now hit ‘Ok’ to complete the link creation.

8 External link Change the Link Type to External Link, then paste or type into the ‘Url’ section. Copy and paste the link in. Delete the ‘http’ from pasted link leave ‘Port’ and ‘Querysting’ blank Alternate Text will be added automatically. Tick ‘Open in new window’ Select ok

9 Asset link Change the link type to Asset Link, then ‘elect asset.

10 Asset link Browsing the asset will take you to our Asset Library. From here, you can state what type of asset you’re looking for. The image or document you are after, may already exist in the Asset library. If you cannot find what you’re after,

11 Asset link If you cannot find a

12 Email link Add the email address Email subject will create the title of the email. If your page is advising people to ask about a certain subject like ‘Star Award nominations’, this can be added. If the user might have a number of different questions after reading the content, it will be best to leave it blank. The Alternate Text should define what the link is for, or what it will do. I.e. ‘email Communications’

13 Telephone link Copy and paste or type the number, with or without spaces. The alternate text for telephone numbers is only useful for PC users, as it highlights where the link is taking users. When creating Alt text for any link type, it cannot be the same as the text written on the page. This must be different.
