PSALM 1 PSALM 91 MY REFUGE AND MY FORTRESS

“In the whole collection there is not a more cheering psalm; its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best and speaks nobly.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon

PSALM 91 The psalmist’s testimony vv. 1-2 – “I” The psalmist’s invitation to the reader vv. 3-13 – “You” God’s promises to those who love Him vv. 14-16 – “I”

THE PSALMIST’S TESTIMONY 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

THE PSALMIST’S INVITATION 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

THE PSALMIST’S INVITATION 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.

THE PSALMIST’S INVITATION 9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place — the Most High, who is my refuge — 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.

THE PSALMIST’S INVITATION 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

GOD’S PROMISES 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

PRINCIPLES FROM PSALM 90 God : Eternal, Independent, Creator, Sovereign, Holy, Perfect, Personal, Just, Judge, Wrath, Loving, Merciful, Gracious Humans: dependent, weak, frail, sinners, all die Proper human response: fear the Lord, confess sin, repent, trust in Christ as Savior, number your days (live for Christ while on earth), look forward to your eternal home with Christ

SAVED FROM SEPARATION FROM GOD Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

PRINCIPLES FROM PSALM 91 God: One God in three Persons – relational God: Sovereign, all-powerful, able to protect God: Independent, Most High, Transcendent God: faithful with security, protection, and intimacy to those who trust Him, love Him & know Him through The Lord Jesus Christ God: faithful with wrath and separation to the wicked who reject The Lord Jesus Christ

SECURITY FOR THOSE WHO TRUST GOD Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

SECURITY FOR THOSE WHO LOVE GOD Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 1 Corinthians 1:9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”

SECURITY FOR THOSE WHO KNOW GOD John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

APPLICATIONS Do you have a personal relationship with The Father through a personal relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ? Does your life demonstrate that you trust God or trust in something worldly more? Does your life demonstrate that you love God or love something worldly more? Are you developing intimacy with God to know Him or are you taking the relationship for granted?
