Circuits Lab Write down your group member names and select a group recorder.

Warm-Up:Warm-Up: Differentiate between a series and a parallel circuit in a Venn Diagram. Series Circuit Parallel Circuit

Standards to review today: S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. b. Demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits and how they transfer energy. c. Investigate and explain that electric currents and magnets can exert force on each other

Essential Questions: Essential Questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits? How is electricity related to magnetism?

Practice with Circuits Let’s review what happens within a circuit. Remember to use key terms from the word wall! Look at the material in your blue box. Identify the parts that you will use to make a circuit (exclude the items in the baggie).

Circuits Lab Step 1a: Make a simple SERIES circuit:

Circuits Lab Step 2: Disconnect the conductor from the power source. What happens to the load? What happens when you re-connect it?

Circuits Lab Step 3: Open the baggie on your desk and examine the objects. Separate them into two piles: Conductors and Insulators. Find a way to test to see if your predictions were right using your series circuit.

Circuits Lab Step 4: Make a SERIES circuit using more than one load. What happened to the lightbulbs? What happens if you unscrew one lightbulb?

Circuits Lab Step 5: How is electricity related to magnetism? Can you pick up some iron filings with your series circuit?

Circuits Lab Step 6: How is electricity related to magnetism? What happens when you place a compass under your conductor? Can you explain WHY that is happening?

Circuits Lab Step 7: How is electricity related to magnetism? What happens when you loop your conductor around the compass? Why is this happening?

Circuits Lab Step 8: Set your circuit to the side, and examine the magnet. What effect do you think this will have on the compass? Test it. Why does it have this effect?

Circuits Lab Step 9: Now make a parallel circuit. How is this different from the series circuit? Disconnect it in different places – what do you notice? How does it effect the loads?

Summary: Summary: What are the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits? How is electricity related to magnetism?
